QuoteReplyTopic: How do I do this with out jumping off a cliff Posted: January 12 2000 at 7:03am
For the past ten years I've had short hair, ears exposed short in the back layered top look in different variations. I want to try long hair, the style that I have always thought looked great is a shoulder length bob with a side part. Right now my hair has not been cut in 8 weeks, so the length is about half ove the ears and the back has some length, I realize this will be a year+ commitment.I have gotten mixed suggestions/Comments on growing out hair, some of friends have said that the grow out drove them nuts, so they just went short again, some have said once they grew it out, they realized that short hair was easier, and the styling hassels of long hair was not worth the versatility, and some have said that once you get over the hump, and get to the style you want longer hair is great. Looking for more feedback
Hi Diane :)First of all, please no jumping off any cliffs okay? Anytime, you need any encouragement please come here and we will try to give you some. Deal? :)I think it's great you are in the process of growing out your hair and yes, it might take awhile and you might become a little impatient at times (we all do when we try to grow out our hair), but the results will be worth it. For that awkward growing out stage, you might want to invest in some pretty hair accessories such as cute barrettes, nice headbands, ect. Last time I was at Wal-Mart I noticed they have a variety of pretty hair assessories and they aren't that expensive. I bought a ton for myself.Hope that helps. Please, let us know how it's going and if you need anymore suggestions or advice, we are here for you okay? Good luck and again, I think it's wonderful you are growing out your hair!Maria :)
Hi Diane!I think it's great that you are going into the new millenium with the goal of longer hair! I hope you will not get discouraged and cut if off before it gets nice and long. Several years ago I encouraged a friend to try longer hair after she told me how much she liked my hair and had always wanted long hair. She got hers to just touching her shoulders and decided it was too much effort and chopped it all off! She was just getting to the point where it was going to be easy sailing for her. Once you reach a point of being able to put your hair up in some nice ponytails and updo's it will be easy to grow it longer and longer. On your way to longer hair be sure that you have regular trims and keep a style to it or you will certainly get sick of it. Just don't get discouraged. We all have bad hair days. Get a bunch of accessories. Try a Claires. They are great. I think you will think it is worth it in the end. Let us know how you are doing. Please come here if you need encouragement before you rush off for a chop job. this board is great! Long hair is such a nice thing you can do for yourself. Hang in there. we have all been there.Carolyn B

> When you grow your hair to long, there will be a periodof one year to two years, where your hair will look shaggyas it grows out. You should resist temptations tocut your hair,if you let it grow out. You only needvery small trims on your split ends. Hair vitamins should beused while growing your hair out. Your hair will lookshaggy as it grows out,but you should resist the temptationto cut it,if you want to have truly long hair. Patiencedetermination, and persistance are needed if you want to havemiddle of the back long hair. I would suggest avoidingbeauty shops,if you want long hair.In my town, I have seen seven ladies over forty yearsof age grow their hair long, for the first time in theirlife, which they started growing three years ago. All seven ladies told me they were happy,to have gone thru the patience and persistance to grow their hair to middle of the back, All the seven ladies are happy with their long hair, and NEVER want to cut it short, again. I think you wouldlove the benefits, brilliance, and beauty of having long hair,at any age. Long hair can help a lady feel betterabout herself.
Hate to say this, but if you had short hair for 10 years, you will not get past chin length. This is a huge adjustment, just like if someone had long hair all their lives and cut it short most go back to long. I hope you can pull this off, but if I was a betting person, I would say you won't last to chin length

Me, for one :-) I had very short hair for 16 years, then grew it very long. I agree, though, that it is a big adjustment, but if Diane is truly determined to reach her goal, she can do it.
There also comes a point where the hair will just simply not look good at all without cutting it into a style. Some ways to get over that hurdle are to use headbands and barrettes or if it really looks bad, just get some light fabric and makes small scarves or very thick headbands! I'm also growing my hair out, and although I'm not to a truly "awkward" stage yet, my armory, whoops, I mean my drawer {grin} is filled with headbands and scarves already! Also, another suggestion is to experiment a bit more with make-up and accessories to offset those awkward stages. It will help draw attention away from the hair.Jena
It can be done! I'm where you are...my hair had been super short for quite a while. My last short cut was in July; I had a tiny trim in October to shape it up and that was the last time scissors touched my head. I've done this lots of times (grown out a short cut) and my advice to you - don't be afraid of your hairstylist! Talk to your stylist about your goal, and then let him or her give your hair a shape that will grow out as gracefully as possible. If you continue to get trims and shape-ups every few months as it grows out, you'll be much less likely to get fed up with shapeless, straggly growing-out hair and get it cut off again just to be done with it. Good luck!
