Hair colour for fragile, curly hair

Hello all,

My b-day is coming and I feel like I want a change in my very ordinary, curly, semi-short, blue-black mop, but I am worried about the damages it may wrack on my very fragile hair. It's like, if I look at it too long, it breaks! I've been working hard on keeping it healthy and it would totally tick me off if I did something to ruin almost a year of hard haircare sacrifices! Is there something out there that can give my some flair yet be gentle enough to keep my hair healthy? Or am I better off with just a new haircut?
