Hi I made a post a few posts down about my hair problem and I got a few responses, and a majority of the responses I got told me that I overwash my hair, and I shouldn't do it everyday. Well I quit washing it everyday the past week or two I've cut down to washing it like every other day,I haven't noticed a big imporvment in my hair since I started to do this, actually when I skip a day and don't wash it,the day I don't wash it is when it seems that I lose more strands of hair then when I do wash it,why is that? Why should I not wash it everyday? Will it possibly prevent against maybe possible hair loss down the road? Will it make my hair in better condition or make it stronger?

Superstar,

I don't remember this thread, but....

Washing your hair on a daily basis should not harm it, provided you use a good (gentle) shampoo, lather only once, and condition afterward. There may be other factors I don't know about from the other post. Is your hair severely damaged?

Some European stylists have commented in interviews that Americans overwash their hair, stripping it of all moisture and shine. But in previous discussions on this forum, this was generally deemed "situational." It depends on you and your hairwashing habits. In fact, I believe Karen washes her hair daily. I know I do. It makes my hair more manageable, and I use less product in the long run.

If you have very dry or damaged hair, you might try washing less frequently to see if that helps its condition. If it's not working for you, though, go back to what you know.

Another thing to consider: When you wash your hair daily, it is not necessary to lather your entire head. Lather the scalp only (where oil accumulates) and simply rinse the suds through the length of your hair.

Good luck,
Ally

Hi Ally,

Yes...I do wash my hair every single day. When I don't wash it I feel yucky all day. I have learned that for me and my hair type (dry, naturally wavy, coarse, highlighted) that I need to wash my hair every day with a strong moisturizing product.

I currently alternate between several products which also may help and does make a difference for me. I use ARTec's Smoothing shampoo and ARTec Smoothing conditioner on some days and I use Aveda's Shampure and Cherry Almond Bark on other days. If my hair starts feeling a little too moisturized I will use Aveda Blue Malva or Aveda Chamomile color shampoos and finish with Aveda Deep conditioner or Curessence.

I also use a leave in conditioner and I love Phytologie's #7 and #9. I think the 9 is more moisturizing.

I never blow dry and will towel blot my hair, pick it with a large pick, roll it into a bun and then pop an alligator clip into it. I let it air dry and within about 2-3 hours I let if down and have nice soft waves.

One thing with shampoo is that it is important not to pour it directly onto your head. Many people make this mistake and then it is hard to get all the residue out. Pour the shampoo into the palm of your hand and then massage it into your hair. Also, use as little as possible to avoid overkill.

Ally is right...the Europeans believe that Americans overshampoo. It may not be that we overshampoo but it may be that we use too much when we do.

Also, try applying the shampoo from your palms to different starting points. One hair specialist recently told me that most people apply the shampoo either directly from the bottle to the same spot on their head every day which tends to wear on that part of the hair. Also, he told me that is it best to apply the shampoo from the palms of your hands and then every time alternate which part of the scalp your start with.

I try to remember that and will try to start at the front or back of my scalp on different days. I also do not apply shampoo to the mid to lower lengths of my hair but let the suds from the scalp wash down the length and clean it that way.

The longer your hair the more fragile it is towards the bottom.

Hope that helps. Thanks Ally.

Best wishes,
Karen Shelton
