QuoteReplyTopic: I used to have straight hair, now its wavy, what happened? Posted: August 13 2004 at 11:08pm
From the time I was born I had always had long straight shiny think hair but by the time I was 12 or 13 years old, I decided to get a fade and spike my hair. Throughout the 3 years with spikey hair, it began becoming more wavier and wavyvier. Im not sure if this was because of all the gel use, or of because my brother always cut my hair and i hardly ever got it professionaly cut. Or was it heriditary? well my mom and dad have very straight hair, and so do 2 of my older brothers, but my other oldest brother has wavy hair just like me and his hair used to be straight when he was young also. well anway I wanted to grow out my hair long and I thought when if it was long enoguh it would eventually become straight but it didn't. My hair is about 6 inches long right now and its still some what wavy. I mean my hair now is a mixture of straight and wavy hairs. But mostly wavy. I've styled my hair with my sisters CHI iron and it looked great. It only took like 5 mins to make look perfect and straight. But when I take a shower, it becomes wavy again =/. I was just wondering, what caused my hair to become wavy? and is a relaxer the best thing to do because i've been researching and it seems I could unfortunatrly lose my hair.
some things to add: im vietnamese and my hair is about 5 or more inches all the way around my head, like my top and sides. usually when i get a haircut, its very straight for a few days and it becomes wavy again eventually. the hair in the back is straight. when my hair is wet, its very stiff kind of but when i fall asleep the next day its somewhat soft. what kind of shampoo or conditioner do you recomend i use. also..how long does a relaxer take and how long does your stay straight, like months/years.?
Yo, I'm Viet too... some VN have wavy hair like you. It's quite rare, but it still happens. If your brother has a "developed" waviness, I'd say you're likely to have the same case. Especially since you noticed this change as you went through your early teen years. First of all, do you have a non-VN grandparent? Even a little bit of foreign gene makes a difference. My great-grandparent was Chinese and I get flat hair strands. And secondly, hair does change through your life; most of the change happening through your teens.
I use Kirkland Marine Algae shampoo--it's very similar to Paul Mitchell's white pearl colored shampoo, works nicely to control oily scalp. My Suave BioBasics conditioner controls frizz really well, if you have that issue at all. I'm not sure if my products would do you any good, but they seem to work great for my long Viet hair. They're cheap, and you can donate them if they don't work for you.
A relaxing treatment is a lot of chemicals for your hair to handle. It's okay for short hair but longhairs are recommended to stay away from it (causes longterm damage). Folks who want to grow long hair are also recommended to stay away from relaxers and perms. As long as you're not growing to a super length, many people in this Asian forum know a thing or two about relaxing... they'll help you out.
Actually I think I may have a bit of Chinese in me. I don't really want to grow my hair out any longer, I would say its about medium length right now. I used to have very very short hair and I've been growing it out for about 7 months so far with a few trims and haircuts. If I keep my hair medium length, could I still get a relaxer without causing lots of harm?
Then you're like me, only you got waves and I didn't (darn, wavy hair woulda been so fun). If you're maintaining your length at a medium length, rather than growing, then chemical treatments shouldn't be that much trauma for your hair. If things go wrong, you can grow it back in a reasonable amount of time.
Others can post info about relaxing treatments if you need.
What you are experiencing is due to genetics and hormones. There are stories of Asians turning 14 and noticing more curl in their hair. My neighbors hair was essentially an afro during her pregancy when there were flucuating hormones.
I suggest a reverse perm like the kit from Ogilvie or Curl Free. Look in drug stores, don't go to a salon just to straighten some waves.
I'd advise you to be extremely careful with the timing. These kits usually work faster than they recommended time.
But really, I'd keep those waves, because the whole textured hair thing is big now. You won't believe how much trouble it is to make fake waves in Asian hair, it usually falls flat by noontime.
PS. My dad is like you, he is wavy haired too and he's Viet.
You'd be surprised, Johnny. Personally I keep a picture of Arwen Evenstar on my Explorer home html page, as motivation for when I reach my hair goals... then I'll be damp braiding like crazy to get those loose Lord of the Rings waves! I love my straight hair, but the wave gives my hair a bit of variety sometimes.
