my asian hair

ok, so i have the typical asian hair. dark brownish-perfectly straight. ive been growing it out for the last 6 months and its about 6in on the top and 2 inches on the sides. YES it FINALLY goes down but it looks ugly. It just goes STRAIGHT down in perfectly vertical lines and the top has no shape. how do you give it that slight curl that white folks have?

something like that... but less ... wet. i want to make the curls go with the scalp rather than curl on the scalp. so how would you perm that?
