I've been coloring my hair for several years now (every 2 months), and I've noticed that my hair has been thinning out. I still have lots of hair, but it's just not as full as it used to be (on the scalp). Has anybody else experienced this?

Yeah, when I was younger (much younger), I used to bleach my hair alot, I used some really rough products. My hair has never recovered it's thickness.

I guess I'll take a break from coloring for a while...

There is a huge difference between coloring and bleaching. It also depends on how long it was left on and if you are caring for it properly. Other factors can be if it is permed and if you are taking certain medication and any recent surgery.

Consider all these things before choosing. See your hairdresser to be for sure.

What is the difference between bleaching and dyeing?

Anything I've ever used to dye my hair had hydrogen peroxide as the main ingredient, and I thought this was bleach of sorts.

I dunno what is in the dye they use in salons, but I imagine it is peroxide based, too.

LilyBeach,
My hair is straight, and naturally dark brown. I use L'oreal Preference ( light brown). Last time I colored my hair I left it on for forty minutes instead of the twenty-five suggested on the box. Do those extra 15 minutes make a difference ( hair loss wise)?
I take pretty good care of my hair, I use Terax haircare, I try to avoid using the blowdrier, and always take my vitamins.
Also can my hair grow back to what it used to be (fuller hair), and should I stop coloring for a while?

Stephy, Are you putting the color all over or just the newgrowth when you retouch your color? This could be the problem. You only need to do the newgrowth at the roots. And yes the extra 15 minutes can make a big difference. It leaves the cuticle open longer than it should.

Grover, Yes bleach is used with the same developer as color BUT It is the fact it is with Bleach which makes it harsher.....alot harsher. It needs to be because it is pulling the color molecules out of the hair. Where color just needs to add to the existing color molecules. Salon color is made with vegetable derivatives, where store bought color is made with metalic dyes which is much harsher. It is there because they need to make sure that the consumer can cover there gray.

I hope this helps

Thank you LiliBeach for the info.
When I color my hair I do the roots first, and ten minutes before the time is up, I use what's left in the bottle on the rest of my hair.
I'll be more careful in the future, and won't leave the color in for so long.

I know it's harder to do, because it's more expensive, but I stopped colouring at home and only have my hair coloured at the salon. I scrimp and save to be able to do it, but since I stopped colouring at home I haven't had any mishaps with getting the wrong colour, my hair isn't as damaged as it was by the home colour, and the colour lasts longer.

I've had some very bad experiences with colouring at home that I then had to go pay to have the salon fix anyhow. In my little opinion, I think it's better to go to the salon in the first place.
