On Saturday night, I dyed my hair "Medium Golden Brown" so I could get to my natural brunette shade. The hair color I used was L'Oreal Preference. I previously had blond highlights. Well the color is not great. My hair isn't fried, but the color sucks!! It's way too dark. Plus, I washed my hair really well with some regular shampoo today in order to get rid of the excess color deposits. It worked a little but, now the blond highlights are showing through! Plus, I have reddish tones on the crown of my head. (on the new growth that hasn't been highlighted.) I have an appointment with a hair colorist on Wednesday, do you think I'll be able to get my highlights again, or at least reclaim a pretty golden/honey brown color? I'm freaking out, I will NEVER dye my hair at home again.

Just wondering why you chose a Medium Golden Brown to try and go brunette instead of a straight brown shade.

Many years ago (so many I won't even tell you how long), I wanted to get golden highlights in my medium-dark brown hair. I would use one of the blond shades and my hair would turn out a wee bit lighter with pretty gold highlights.

But to go brunette, my guess is a medium - dark brown with no mention of gold or red might have worked better.

Do let us know what happens. I find hair coloring to be fascinating, even when it doesn't turn out right. There is something of the artist in working with all these myriad colors and our hair as the canvas. My, I do wax poetic at times!

Hi everyone!

Wow, I forgot I had posted this message awhile ago. Hehe. It's time for an update:

2 weeks after I dyed it, I went to the salon and got some highlights and lowlights put in to counteract the brassiness. (By now, my hair looked REALLY bad-uneven blotchy color with red tones.) Anyway, they came out beautifully!! My colorist also used a toner afterwards which I think made it much better. My hair is not any more damaged or dry than it was before, which took a load off my back.

I'm loving the color! It's not as bright as how I had gotten it highlighted before. Looks very natural and touch ups will be less frequent.

I've heard that attempting home coloring if you already have highlighted hair can get very tricky. Guess it's true, judging by your experience.

So glad it worked out in the end. Enjoy your beautiful color!
