I have almost 100% grey hair. I am in my fifties and have been told I don't look anywhere near that age (been told that most of my life--was carded in bars when I was 27 years old).

When I get my hair colored, I always ask for the great new shades such as Herbal Essences and Feria put out but in the professional brands at the salons. I am constantly told it can't be done because the grey would turn out too intense.

I WANT bright, lustrous hair! Most women my age are basically looking for grey coverage, but I'm a former groupie, still a bit on the wild side and am in love with the new prismatic shades or whatever they call it. It hurts to be told I have to stick to the OK but dull (to me) colors that cover grey.

If an intense red or auburn is put on, what would happen? If it means bright, that would be great! My recent trial with Natural Instincts Exotic Bright Auburn Brown looked wonderful, though it's only on a portion of my head. It's time to color again.

I'm tired of hearing or reading "not for hair more then 25% grey" etc. I want my hair to stand out and shine! Not purple or orange but rich and deep. Any suggestions for this gracefully aging ex-groupie who misses riding in the limos with the Stones and the Who!

Thanks in advance.

I say go for that intense color if that's what you want! The thing to remember with grey hair is since it doesn't have any pigment in it you have to mix a bit of a neutral color in with the rich red you're considering. It will still be intense, but the grey coverage will be better. I've seen suggested mixing 1/2 oz. of the neutral color with 1 1/2 oz. of the intense color, or half and half, along with the requisite 2 oz. of developer.
Anyhow, forget the rules - it sounds like your style is bold - go for it!

Yeah, I hate fashiony people who think that everyone should follow exactly what everyone is doing.
It's nice to see someone's not lost their individuality.

You can always do it yourself if they really won't do it or just change your hairdresser.

Thanks for the encouragement! I can remember one colorist who, when I showed her a poster they had of a women with gorgeous Auburn hair, said "oh, you don't want that" and continued to color my hair an OK but bland med. golden brown. She used to start mixing up the color when I walked into the place! I kept thinking how great the auburn would look with all my black velvet clothes and bright blue eyes....

Well, I took a good look around and noticed a clientele consisting of kindly looking grandmothers of about 70 yrs. old and realized that maybe I was using the wrong salon.

This is week 3 of my test area with Natural Instincts "Exotic" Caribbean Mahogany (described on the box as a bright auburn reddish brown). Couldn't resist the $3.00 sale price and bought it on a whim. The box said not recommended for hair more then 25% grey or something like that, but I hadn't even noticed that until later). My hair is still auburn, my grey is still covered though a little lighter then the longer hair, and it's holding up just fine, getting just slightly less with normal shampooing. As this is a level 2 color I don't expect it to stay.

At both salons and in the stores, there are now colors where the shade can be pumped up or subdued according to whim. Think I'll take the plunge very soon. Might look like Happy the Clown but that's life. And short hair is in pretty much now, just in case.

It's like--grey's can't have any fun. What the heck, I own 5 wigs in case of a goof up. Gotta take some chances and have some fun outta life.
