A week ago I went to a salon to have my gray covered. I wanted my hair color to stay the same or go slightly darker. What I got was lighter with a red/orangey cast especially on the top of my head, and it is really bright in strong light. I don't know what went wrong, but because my hair is very long, I wonder if the color was on the top of my head too long since it took some time to get all the gook on it. Needless to say I have been extremely upset all week. I spoke with the stylist who said she could fix it but I'm so paranoid and gun-shy now that I'm not sure I want her to do it again and risk getting something that's worse than what I have now. She used Matrix Socolor at 20vol (whatever that means). Another stylist that was listing to our conversation suggested putting a darker color on it with some ash at a 5 vol. She said it wouldn't lift color this time. I don't know what this all means so I probably don't have all the details but that's all I remember.
I don't want to risk coloring at home, that's why I went to a "professional" to begin with. If I could just darken it down to a light brown and get rid of the red, I would feel much better.
What can I do go fix this and are there any temporary fixes I can do with shampoos or rinses to tone this down until I can get to a salon?

You need to go back to the salon for a correction. That's what happened to me on my second visit to the local vo tech to have my gray growth covered. I had a lovely auburn shade. My gray turned out a pink-orange, very bright. The student had just hurriedly covered my whole head with the color, left it for 30 minutes (even though I told her my gray needed a longer time then that) and that was the result. Her instructor tried to blame it on the condition of my gray hair (although it never happened before) instead of what the student did and when I came away from there my hair was very dark brown. I've been trying to get it lighter ever since. Needless to say, I never went back. BTW, they used SoColor on my hair.
The salon should correct this at no charge to you. Don't be shy about going back, it's not your fault and you deserve to get what you paid for. Even if you go somewhere else, I still would let her know what happened. People make mistakes and they won't learn from them if you don't tell them something is wrong.

If it's too red, it was formulated incorrectly. It has little to do with the brand of color. Every brand is capable of covering or blending grey hair. But, not every person/stylist applying the color has the experience or education to get it right. Even those of us with many years of coloring hair under our belt, still have to reformulate, re-apply or tweek a color to get it right.
Go back, let them re-evaluate. Ask if they keep track each time so that next time you go in you know which formula was best for your hair.
