I was just curious, does anyone have this color application tool called "Roots Only"?

I bought it years ago, and it's a bottle that has a top which contains small, hollow combs so you can apply the hair colour to your roots when you are ready for touch-up's.

I'm still having problems getting the color just on my new hair growth, and this problem is making my hair become more damaged. So, I'm ending up touching my roots up less frequently (every 2-3 months).

Also, my natural hair colour is a dark blonde, and I'm considering going very light blonde but am unsure if this is a wise decision. The blonding kits (I won't go to a hairdresser because of cost) to get my hair a light, ash blonde would be more harmful than the current colour I'm now using (Loreal's Preference Light Ash Blonde).

Any feedback is much appreciated! :)

I was wondering if Roots Only would work. It looks easy enough.

L'oreal Excellence has a comb tip that can be used in place of the regular one. My hubby who helped with my hair found it very easy to use. It is meant for coloring the whole strand but he thought it was great for the gray area.

Roots Only has to be better then that big plastic applicator they sell in drugstores. The color leaked out all over the place and we ended up throwing the darn thing out.

Here's something I've done in the past to help: to allow me to go longer between permanent color touch-ups, I use natural instincts once or twice in between. It starts washing out a little bit at a time after a few washes, but it allows me to go much longer and let the roots grow out a bit. As you know, the longer they are the easier it is to concentrate on them.

But now I don't do that as much because I'm getting better at roots-only. I use the pointy back end of the brush (get a real color application brush at a beauty supply place, they are great) to do my sections. I do them kind of small, about an inch each, and that makes it easier to do it correctly and avoid getting color on the older hair.

Hope this helps.

goreygirl, I just used Loreal's Excellence a couple of weeks ago to touch up my hair, and saw that comb hair applicator you mentioned. It seems like just a smaller version of the Roots Only. For some reason, my hair doesn't ever look that good after using the Loreal hair color products, so I think I may change to Lumia after hearing how good it is.

Elissa, thanks for the suggestion about the Natural Instincts and the professional hair applicator -- I'll get one at Sally's Beauty Supply next time I go, and pick up a box of Natural Instinct in a light ash blonde shade next trip to the drug store and see how that works to extend my color.

See my post on Excellence. It looked light auburn--for a day. The first shampoo done at a salon as I was getting a trim took out all the red and left it a medium golden brown. Nice, but not what I wanted. It's just a blah color.

My hair has never looked so flat and dull as it did when I used Excellence. Why didn't I go with the strand test with the Nice N Easy? Not only did the hair feel so soft and was shiny as anything, but the color was a lot richer. The strand tests using Excellence and Preference made my hair feel like straw, though to tell the truth I didn't follow through with the conditioner on the test strand. Although the final coloring job did not have that effect, just left my hair blah. Nice N Easy without the conditioner left my hair smooth as silk.

Everyone's hair is different, and I thought Nice N Easy would dry hair out. My strand test showed the exact opposite, and it was really beautiful. Am I dumb or what?

It sounds as if you and I have had similar experiences with Loreal Excellence haircolor -- my hair was also extremely dry and like straw after coloring it. I've had to use several protein pacs a week (leaving them on for about 20 minutes) just to get some semblance of shine and health back to my hair. Also, I've been using extra large rollers on my damp hair instead of blow drying it so I don't cause further damage.

I'm glad you had a good experience with Nice N' Easy, I've always wondered how that product worked, but never tried it. I think I'll be picking this one up and see how it works, since it worked so well on your hair.

Excellence claims all these conditioners in their product. Then why does the hair look so dull?

I'm thinking of trying Ultress because Nice & Easy doesn't have a really red shade. But all I know is the strand test left the hair soft, shiny and very silky to the touch. And that was without any conditioner applied to it.

Just remember to strand test first. And let us know if you like the results. Good luck.

Hello Kateyez37 and goreygirl:  I would love to send you a Roots Only applicator comb for your use.  If you like how it works, just post your experience here on the forums.  Also, you will not be able to purchase Roots Only at Wal-Mart but, there's a great chance you'll soon see it at Sally Beauty Supply.  Email me at mike@rootsonly.com where I can send you your Roots Only.

Sincerely,
Mike
