QuoteReplyTopic: Growing back natural hair color Posted: January 21 2004 at 9:42am
I'm thinking that my situation is not typical, but here goes: I have naturally curly, shoulder-length hair which I have been coloring for years. When I retired 3 years ago, I told myself that I would stop coloring it and let the gray grow out. Well, I'm finally ready to do that, but don't know how to do it gracefully. I have been using Clairol Natural Instincts in the colors of Suede or Toasted Almond depending on what was available at the time of purchase. My natural hair color before I developed this much gray was a medium brown, but it is now about 50% gray according to what I see on my inch long roots. Any suggestions on how to make this transition a bit more gracefully?
Does your Natural Instincts wash all the way out, or does some of it "stain" your hair? Because if it's truly washing out, you can just stop using it and see what happens. Have you tried this yet?
My Natural Instincts never washed all the way out--maybe because I was using darker browns than you (medium brown 20 mixed with medium warm brown 20 B). So this wouldn't have worked for me, but it might for you.
If yours isn't washing out, I may have some other ideas.
No, my color is not washing out. The only difference between this type of hair color and the so-called permanent hair dyes (at least for me) is that the growth line of demarcation isn't as hard as it was when I used the permanent dyes. So, it isn't really washing out for me. I haven't colored it since November. Previously, coloring was a monthly event for me. So, it is now quite apparent that there is uncolored growth. So, your other ideas would be welcome!

You might want to try some sort of wash-out rinse or get professional highlights done. Pro highlights can really help transition from one hair color to another. If you have darker hair and it is going grey, you could transition with a lighter, maybe a blond-ish highlight and that blends nicely into the lighter grey. You may have to get highlights for a year or so to make a graceful transition. Find a good hairstylist and talk to them about what you want to do, that is the best bet. Best of luck, I think grey hair is often quite beautiful!
