Blonde to Red

My natural hair color is a medium brown which I color blonde by using a lightening kit followed by a toner. I've been doing this for a couple of years and have been quite successful with it, my hair remains shiny and healthy as long as I keep up on conditioning it. However, I feel like I want a change. I would like to color my hair a darker reddish blonde color but when I've tried this in the past my blond underneath shows through in a couple of washings leaving a very dingy brassy tone.

Does anyone know how I can add a darker red color that won't show my blond so easily? Also, if I do color it red, would I still have to use a lightening kit before adding the red color since my roots are dark? Any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks!
