Decided that I can't afford my hairdresser anymore (plus she's not very nice to me - kind of has an attitude) and it was re-growth touch up time. Here's the history of my hair to date...need some recommends:

*Hair is normally a med. (Level 4, maybe as dark as a Level 3) brown.

*My hairdresser turned it a great non-orangey dark blonde (just the faintest hint a warm color) of with a few highlights. Perfecto.

*On advice of a hairdresser, I used Color Charm Dark Blonde N (permament) with a mix of 20+40 developer and turned my roots, yep, orange.

*Went back and bought L'Oreal Excellence Creme Dark Blonde 7. The person at the store told me to use 20 Dev. That didn't sound right. I kept saying, I want to deposit only "shouldn't I use a 10?" She said no, because it will make your hair darker than you want. So I came home and did a strand test. Guess what? Orangish.

*Next mixed the rest of the tube with 20 dev. + water. Started running out of color, was kind of pushing it, but maybe the outcome would be just the right amount of dark. Well, I was close.

*Also, I don't really know how to do just the roots. Any tips? I ended up giving up and just slathering it all over my head, except the front that has highlights. I just sectioned that off and didn't touch it.

*So, the result was...you guessed it again...dulled orange roots and nice, deep, ashey dark color mid-shaft to the ends. Hmmm...

Question 1: Can I use a stripper for just a minute or two to lift the extreme darkness on the ends? I have fine, thick short hair that WAS in great condition--now it feels like it needs a lot of TLC.

Question 2: What happens if you use 10 Dev. with perm haircolor--will it just deposit only lke I wanted it to? Will the color last longer than semi-perm?

Question 3: What is toner? Should I use that to deepen in my roots a little? What developer do I use with it?

Question 4: What brands do you recommend for stipper and/or toner?

Question 5: Finally...what is a good method for getting the roots only? And, how do I protect my highlights?

Thanks.

Update:

Well, I went to a beauty supply/salon. I spoke to two stylists.

1 stylist: Was an older, sort of angry, snooty sort of person. I have nothing against older people...not at all, but has anyone else experienced this? She started off with "I CANNOT give haircolor advice." I said, "Ok, I just have some technical questions."

I asked, "what do you think of this color stripper? Can you give me some info.?" She said, "It is just bleach. If I were you, I would take your hair through a cap and bleach your hair to a golden blonde, then recolor." WHAT THE HELL? Glad I came to these boards FIRST, honstly. She made me feel so embarrassed for asking questions that I gave up and juist decided to use the knowledge I have been getting here.

So, another (younger) girl approached me and asked if I needed help. She was heaven sent, I swear. I started off with "I know you can't give me color advice, but, I do have a few questions." She said, "Sure I can give you color advice, that's what I'm here for." WOW!!!

I asked her every imaginable question, and she seemed to say pretty much the things I learned here. She reassured me that my hair looked pretty good already. I asked her about the color remover and she said that she encouraged me to try a little, but just mix with water. I bought Effesol by L'Oreal and she said I could just mix it with distilled water for the mildest results.

Then, I picked out a semi-perm color for the roots (light ash blonde). She also steered me toward Violights by Fermasi and Terax conditioning creme.

She was SOOO sweet. She said she understood about the expense of going to a sylist all the time. She added that she has some customers that like to do it themselves, but come to her once in awhile to even things up or do the highlights since they can be hard to do on your own. Then, she handed me a card for $10 off any service. I bought all sorts of stuff and I will definitely give her a try for a few highlights in the front.

Funny enough, the other lady came up to the counter while she was talking to me and still had that mad look on her face. The sweet girl made me feel comfortable asking questions, encouraged me, and made me want to hang on to her card when I'm feeling flush with cash. What a difference.

So, came home and did a test piece of the color remover on the ends of my hair. Mixed with warm water and left on 5 min. Came out perfect. Slapped the rest on my head and washed with the blue/violet shampoo and conditioned with Terax. I noticed my hair felt a bit damaged when I shampooed, but when I put the conditioner, slick as ever.

It came out just wonderful. It's a little warm, but I'm not worried. I'll just work with the semi-perm color a little and use the blue shampoo. My hair is now closer to the Jennifer Anniston color than ever! Success!!!
