A friend of mine told me last week that when I buy shampoo and conditioner for my hair that I should be careful not to buy any products with either silicone or any other type of cones or anything that has mineral oil in the ingredients. I have heard that cones can be harmful but I have not ever heard about mineral oils. Anyone know anything about this?

Silicons are not completely bad, depending on your hair type and how often you use them, they can benefit some hair types such as frizzy hair by smoothing the hair but since they close the hair shafts,if you use them to often your hair will be deprived of moisture also mineral oil is a good emolient for your hair but using too much can clog your hair folicles and not allow your hair to absorb nutrients, petroleum jelly is even more importent to look out for.unless you have frizzy hair you probley should stay clear of these ingredients

Hi Cannelle,

This is an individualistic thing. Some people can use silicones indefinitely without any problems for an extended period of time. Other people have problems almost immediately. Mineral oil may or may not build up on hair over time. The key is to try what you seem would work for your hair and then keep a close eye on the results and adjust from there.

if you notice a build up, baking soda mixed in with shampoo to make a paste is pretty good at getting it out.

you may have to do this a few times depending on how bad your build up is.
