Hi! I would like to get as much feedback as possible re: what all of you think is the best at home haircolor.. Feria... Preference... Garnier... etc. I'm looking to go red, so, please offer any and all advice you may have.
I've probably used every brand of hairdye on the shelf (except the ultra cheapo Revlon Colorsilk and that new Garnier 100% Color) and I almost always go back to Nice-N-Easy.
My experiences: Couleur Experte - doesn't lift your present haircolor enough. I did like the Light Copper Brown shade, but it always came out browner than the guide would lead you to believe. Nice natural auburn though. Expensive and the highlighting can be tricky (tends towards fakey gold). Big con- I used the Dark Ash Blonde shade over the auburn shade to go lighter and I wound up with medium brown hair!!!
Feria - Pretty good. I like the medium bronzed brown. But sometimes, their brown shades come out too dark--almost black-- on my hair. Maybe it's my hair? The super Reds will do exactly what they advertise.
Revlon High Dimensions - AVOID AVOID AVOID! It processes in 10 minutes. That's not enough time to spread it all evenly on your hair. I tried it twice and both times wound up with uneven coloring. Fades fast too.
Excellence - Used it once. It was alright.
Nutrisse - Loved the dark golden blonde color. My hair was the nicest caramel shade. Smells good too.
Open - Discontinued. Milder than most (less peroxide) and can't make a big change to your hair.
Lumia - Same as Open.
Natural Instincts - Natural looking color. Tons and tons of shades.

I think I've also used almost every permanent coloring product you can buy over the counter, and had been using Loreal's Excellence and Preference for years before switching to Garnier's 100% XL (Extreme Beige Blonde). I don't know a lot about reds, but a friend of mine has used this line in a red color and really loves the results she has received (she said the color didn't fade and it was a very pretty auburn).
When I used Loreal's Feria, I thought it was WAY too mild - didn't change my dark blonde/light brown hair very much at all. They even have a line of colors with pinkish tones.
I loved the haircolor OPEN, but don't understand why they discontinued it, as it was one of the best colorants I've ever used. I found for myself that it lifted my color to the lighter blonde tone that I got with the Loreal's Preference.
So, I would say (from what I've heard and from experience) either the Garnier Nutrisse or the Garnier 100% XL would be a good purchase, IMHO.
FERIA- used 2 times(highlighting, power reds) RUN!!! IT DRIES YOUR HAIR LIKE MAD! Nice shades and usually tuns out nice...but VERY dry!And "power" red is not gimmick- expect VERY red color!!!!!!!!
PREFERENCE- nice,but boring shades
in a few days I'll be trying a new Loreal product called ColorPulse
FACT: Loreal owns Garnier! Basically, most haircolor is somehow loreal
Hmm, it seems like all the products on the shelf are either L'Oreal or Clairol.
I honestly never had a problem with overdrying. The conditioner Feria packs in the box is really good. Hairlighting is usually more damaging than regular dyeing though.
Power Reds... I used them once too and I wound up looking for a quick fix for my ultra-magenta hair. I had to dye over it. I was expecting RED but not that blindingly fake red. My mistake.

I used Nice & Easy Herbal Essence when I tried to dye my hair auburn. It ended up looking just like the color on the box, but it was all wrong for me! My friend has been dying her hair red for years and she likes Feria.
The only color that works on my dark brown hair is Feria by L'Oreal. I've used the power reds and loved them, but my dark roots would drive me crazy, so I changed to a regular Feria red (cardinal), and that blends better with my dark roots while still giving me a great dark red/auburn.
I've used L'Oreal Excellence and it doesn't do anything to my hair, as well as L'Oreals colour experte=didn't do a thing but darken my already dark hair.
**Hair type: 2a, which is wavy and fine.
**Color: Naturally dark brown, currently dyed reddish brown.
**Length: below shoulder length
Is Clairol Hydrience any good? Cause I want to try Sable cove but on the box it looks a little auburn. And how does Nice and Easy come out? too dark too light? similar to color on the box?

Hydrience is good stuff, or at least it was for me. I dunno about that particular shade, though, because the one I used to use was like a really true red-red. Nice and Easy, I used to use as a teen. . . it was black, which was very, very black, like an unnatural inky black :-P . They've probably changed formulas since then, though, so it might've improved.
