Hi! My name is Holly. I am desperate for some advice. Three days ago I decided I wanted to have red hair. I am naturally a medium blond but my mom has red hair so I thought I could do it. I ended up looking like Ron Weasley from Harry Potter. So I cried and my friend said I had to dye it medium brown to cover the red. I used Preference. Now my hair is dark brown with red under it but only in some spots. Gray in other spots, greenish in others. I have colored my hair three time in three weeks. I want to go back to my blond hair. What can I do? Do I get it professionally stripped or do I gradually color it lighter and lighter or do I need to let it rest for fear of damaging it? My skin in too light for this Marilyn Manson hair I've acquired!

Sorry to hear about your ordeal. You should go to a salon and have an experienced colorist correct this. Anything that you attempt at home at this point will only make things worse, and the condition of your hair may suffer. A colorist who is familiar with corrective coloring should be able to bring you back to your natural color. It may take a few hours to remove this color and then re-color, and it isn't going to be cheap, but it's really the only sensible way to go.

Good luck!

Thank you for your reply. I assumed I'd have to go to a stylist, but didn't want to because it will cost so much! I've learned my lesson about hair color, I know now to accept what color I have or atleast play it safe and not stray too far from my natural but boring mousy hair color.

Do you know the average price I can expect to pay for a salon to fix my hair?

I live in New York City, so, a good, reputable salon here can be a bit pricey. I would say it could cost anywhere from $150-$300. Depending on where you live, it may be lower.

I hope I was able to be of some help.

Best of luck to you!

I live in Orlando, so perhaps the price will be less. Thanks again!

I keep reading about this stuff called Colorfix that is supposed to take out permenant color and leave you with your natural color. I think I may try that instead of going to a salon. It will be less expensive and as long as I get a lighter color I can go back to blond by coloring it myself. I called 4 different Sally's and they recommend it. Does anyone have any experience with this stuff?

I've never tried colorfix, but have done lots of dying to my hair. The best thing to remember is the color wheel. Know what colors are opposite each other so no matter what you get, you will be able to fix it. (If you really want to do it yourself that is...I do suggest letting a salon do it). You sound like you have so many colors right now that your situation is difficult and complicated, and at least if you go to a salon, they won't let you out of there until they get you looking normal again!
If you choose to stick with Sallys (I advise against that, but include this info because you sound like you might try it anyway), remember the color wheel. If you wind up yellow, use a color with a violet base to counteract it. If you wind up orange, use a color with a blue base to counter that. If you wind up red, use a color with a green base. And all vice versa: If you wind up green, use a red base. If you wind up blue, use an orange base. If you wind up purple, use a yellow or gold base.
Good luck! And still, go to a professional instead!

Yes, I suppose I should. My hair basically has red/burgundy underneath and dark brown on top. I guess I should go to a profesisonal, I suppose I was trying to find the cheap way out. I willl try to wait to get it fixed by someone who knows better. Thanks!

I got my hair done today! She said she could not strip it because it was too damaged but she gave me light brown hair with blond highlights all over. Thanks for not letting me ruin my hair by doing it by myself!
