My natural hair color is medium auburn with natural blonde highlights and I want to color it a dark golden blonde. I talked to a consultant at L'Oreal and she told me to use a medium ash blonde. I used it, but it didn't lighten my hair at all, it just removed some of the red tones. I don't want to bleach my hair. Can I get the colour I want without bleaching? Any suggestions (other than going to a salon)?

Not sure about you but I could NEVER get a blonde shade unless i highlighted first and then did an all over Ash on top.

Yikes watch out for green . Some ashes give green glows to highlights

I'm sorry to break it to you, but in order to get to a dark golden blonde from Auburn, you will most certainly need a double process color - which is a bleach and tone job. This is NOT something you should attempt by yourself. Please visit a color specialist if you really want to do this. Take your time and find someone you feel comfortable working with. If possible, get recommendations from people with haircolor that you think looks great. That is the best way to find a good stylist.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll probably go to my sister's colourist because I will definitely not attempt a double process at home.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did call L'Oreal. I used the Medium Ash Blonde the consultant recommended but it didn't lighten my hair. According to them, I would have to use a bleaching product, but they don't recommend it because my hair is so long (waist-length). I've decided not to bleach at home; I don't want to fry my hair or end up with bright yellow or orange hair.

I'm doing a strand test with Excellence Creme Ultra Light Ash Blonde (single process) right now (10 more minutes to go). If that doesn't work, I'll go to a salon.
