So... I'm a natural dark blonde, but for the last two years I've been dying it red. I currently use L'Oreal HiColor in Red Hot, and it's absolutely awesome. The problem is though, I am always wanting a change. I've had my hair dark brown in the past and want to do that again.
But not just the dark brown; I'd like to keep some red in it. I have long sideswept bangs and I was thinking just having the tips red or maybe a chunk or a streak elsewhere in my hair. But how do I achieve this? How do I dye my hair brown but keep part of it red? The red has faded to an auburn color so I wouldn't want to just try to keep the part I want red separated from the rest of it while I dye it. What's the easiest way to achieve what I'm talking about? When I dye my hair, I generally do one all-over color, so while it might not be rocket science, it is sort of new to me... halp!
If you feel at all uncomfortable with what you're about to do, go to a salon and let them do it. They already have the tools for properly separating the hair when they do it.
I'm a little confused, do you just want the red streaks to be red, and the rest of your hair brown with no red undertones? Or have the brown with warm red undertone? You should be able to easily go dark brown and still have a red tone to it, just choose a redder shade of brown when you're picking the color and you should be fine. If you wanted a brown that's not red and more of an ash tone, you have to get an ash shade of brown (which should have a green base) to counteract the red already in your hair.
To get different colors you will have to separate the hair you don't want brown and keep it aside, making sure not to get it in the brown dye. (You can use a rubber band and a plastic bag to help if neccessary). If you want the hair you left out more red than it already is, you will just have to buy a box of red to dye the other hair with. I would do both colors separately to help avoid mixing. If you meant the streaks or tips you want are already too dark, choose a red for those that's a shade lighter than you want, so it will have a lightening effect and make it a brighter red.
