I just called different salons today to get price quotes on highlights. One woman told me that since I have color in my hair, it may take several applications of bleach. Is this true?

My hair isn't that dark. Its like a medium brown. Maybe she means if they dont use heat? Also, if they use a cap, how do they wash the bleach out without getting water through the holes of the cap which would cause my head to get wet and not miss some of the hair that may go back under the cap so that i might end up with blonde ends and orange tips on the top?

My hair was dyed brown. I highlighted it with L'Oreal Creme Lights. One application was enough to lift my colour to pale yellow. Don't go to the stylist who told you you'll need several applications of bleach. Maybe the stylist is trying to stretch one process into two or three appointments to increase her profit margin.

A good salon will use a silicone highlighting cap. The hair is pulled through little "x" shaped slits. The silicone cap is completely water tight. The bleach can't seep through the holes. Your un-highlighted hair should remain completely dry and untouched.
My user name is WAY too long. Just call me Juliana. :-)

Several applications of bleach? Run from that salon.

You should really take the time to meet with a few different colorists - good colorists, to see what they have to say. Do not just walk into a salon and leave it to chance. Highlights can be horrendous when done improperly and beautiful when done right.

Oh, and one more thing. Go for foil highlights. They look better.
