QuoteReplyTopic: Another long haired friend... Posted: November 18 2004 at 12:07pm
A friend of mine has beautiful light red/blonde hair down past her waist. It's really gorgeous. Thing is, it can look a little dull against her skin tone, which is very pale, as you might expect, and it's actually more strawberry blondish than red, so it doesn't contrast as well.
It's completely natural, undyed and that.
She wants to do something to it, and not cut it, perferably with the colour.
I suggested Black, she'd look incredible like that, but maybe it's a bit too obvious.
She wants pure white hair; do you think she'd be able to do it without much damage, sinee her hair's already reasonably light? Would black eventually fade on light hair?
I think she might look okay with dark deep red hair, and that probably wouldn't be permanent.
What do you think?

As for what colour your friend's hair should be, I think that's best left up to her. She's the one who has to be happy with it.
On the subject of white blonde -- Bleaching does cause damage. The usual do-it-yourself method of achieving a white blonde is to bleach to pale yellow and then tone with something like Wella White Lady. Bleaching to white is not recommended. It often results in breakage.
I think a qualified professional is the best person to do a double process like this. Because your friend is a redhead, I highly recommend it.
Red hair represents a special challenge. You mentioned that your friend's hair is quite light already. If her hair were light brown, we would consider it a level 6. Light red (or strawberry blonde), however, is more like a level 4. This is because lightening the hair reveals so much warm pigment and this has to be accounted for. Red hair has a lot more warm pigment to begin with.
I have naturally medium auburn hair, but I treat it as if it were a level 2 (dark brown) when using hi-lifts or toning down warmth after bleaching. I need to use a lot of ash toner to get my hair to a neutral colour. I wouldn't even attempt to achieve a white blonde on my hair.
My user name is WAY too long. Just call me Juliana. :-)
She does get some say in what color she gets right?
I'm just teasing you! Black may be hard to do on light hair (I know a natural light blonde who tried to go burgundy black and wound up barney purple). She should go to a salon to have it done, so if anything goes like that wrong they'll fix it right for free.
White will be damaging to hair even if you start of pretty light. She will probably need more frequent trims if she goes white, but she should be able to maintain it's current length if she takes good care of it. She may have to switch to a heavy silicone containing conditioner to keep it knot free and keep it from feeling so dry (which white hair otherwise does). Silicones may cause more breakage to hair too....so it's sort of a toss up. I had white hair for 6 years, and despite having to trim it more and not being able to grow it longer, I still loved it.

Awwww, thanks korsakovhatt3! I might add you look just lovely with your new blonde color! And so young I would have thought you were 16!
I don't think it will be a problem that her hair is muted. The salon may want to use a green base anyway just to be sure to counteract the red that comes out the first few minutes of processing (if its already that light), then switch to a blonde with a violet base to counter the yellow so she'll get white hair. In other words, they can still do it, and they should know how, so she should be able to get anything she wants.
