Just need to vent. Last Saturday after much weeping and gnashing of teeth... Went and got my top highlighted and lowlighted - trying to blend the winter blahs/roots that have already started to set in, with the blondish summer ends. Had a consultation with the stylist the week before and we went over what she was going to do and was comfortable with it. (Goldwell color - no heat) I emphasized that no matter what - no ashy tones, no ultra blonde! She said - no problem. Things were going well until the next day when I washed it. MUD CITY. My hair is now an ashy mud color. I think it was the toner gloss she used (6N?) to blend the underneath to the top. I also think that it looked okay because she blew it out straight so it reflected the light differently. Wavy - how I normally wear it, it just looks blah. I used UnColor (for semi-permanents) on Thursday morning and it helped a teeny little bit. I am not going to go back for a correction - seeing as how she is supposedly the salon's "Master Designer" and she screwed it up the first time. I don't need to potentially damage my hair even further. I am going to try some of the natural rinses mentioned here on another board. And this is the last time I will EVER have someone touch my hair!

Sorry to hear about your bad time at the salon....don't take it out on all the colorists though! A lot of people do get bad ones, but there are good ones out there too, the trick is just finding the right one.
About your signature, have you tried a hair cinch for your long hair in the wind? http://www.haircinch.com
I have a couple of these. I think they look neat and unusual, and they say they stay in and hold your hair tight even if you're on a motorbike. (I found at first that they pulled my hair a little, but practice putting it in and using a regular ponytail holder with it (instead of it alone) fixes that problem.)

Hi Jeep Girl & Susan. Jeep Girl, your hair is beautiful and that muddy ash tone will fade. I think you're wise to just leave your colour alone and let the ash fade away. I'm dealing with a blue-grey-ash cast on some of my hair right now (after toning). My first reaction was to use ColorFix, bleach or dye over it. I exercised some restraint, though. I'm so glad I did. It's only been 3 days, but the ash has faded significantly already and I've preserved the health of my hair. (I've just been shampooing with dish liquid and dandruff shampoo and deep conditioning to speed up the fading process.) Until it fades completely, I'm just going to wear hats and hair scarves.
Thanks for the Hair Cinch link, Susan. What a great idea. I've never seen anything like it before, but I love the look. I'm going to order one.

Actually the color has faded a bit. It's still a skosh darker than I would like, but it's liveable. I know it's not always the colorists fault, but that's why I went to a "master designer" who specializes in coloring, instead of my regular hairdresser who traumatized me and my hair the last time she highlighted it (too much heat, 40 volume peroxide) 2 years ago. It took me that long to build up the courage to let someone else touch it. I think part of the problem is the length and texture, no one around here knows how to deal with long, fine hair!
As far as the hair cinch... I do something similar when I am in "jeep mode". I put my hair in a ponytail, braid it, then put extra hair bungies down the length. Dorky and heavy, but it works. The pic in my avatar was taken while I was letting it dry, before I put it up for the day.
