ive been coloring my hair for years, my natural is a verrry dark brown which ive gone back to several times.

well in august, i got it dyed at the salon this color that was supposed to be a very light aburn, but turned out very orange(kinda like anne hathaway now?)so i went back and my stylist put more brown into it. it then looked like a sorta mischa barton with reddish hair and a little brown, not quite aburn but kinda close.

the roots started growing back in late october, so i went to the drugstore and got a permenant dye to cover up the roots(i had a big party coming up, didnt want to look tooo bad) it was light ash brown.

after a while, that faded back to about the color i had before i guess...pretty similar. So in Mid Nov. i went to the salon to have it dyed to a very rich, light to med. brown. my stylist told me it would be a light brown, but actually it came out maybe a shade lighter than my natural, so it was pretttttyyy dark. i then asked around on another board and after washing it once with pantene shampoo, i went to neutragena anti residue shampoo, and it lightened my hair a bit. i then did the same 2-3 days after that with the anti residue, and it lightened up again.

so now ive got this color that i actually like. somtimes it looks like a basic med. brown i think....with some golden and reddish tones in sunlight, not too mcuh, probly from the color i had before im thinking

NOW, my question is....how do i get this color again onto my roots? i will go back to the stylist of course, but when she does the color on only my roots it will come out a diff. color right? even if i wash it w/ the same shampoo, because my natural has no red in it at all like the previous color did.

id hate to waste my parents money(yep still a teen living at home) and try to get the color all re-done, but still, it wont look the same right? on me color enventually always fades into a red, but my roots will always be dark brown. so even if i wanted say, the same color i have now only less red, it will still fade out differently on my roots than the rest of my hair that has been colored...right?

sorry if this is long and might not make sense....i just need some advice i guess...TIA

Hi Maria,
I think your best bet is to discuss this with your stylist. I'm not a pro, but I think she will likely choose to colour your roots a tad darker than the rest of your hair because, as you know, the colour will fade significantly in the first week. You say that you have no red in your natural colour, but that actually isn't true. In order to get to the colour you want, your stylist will have to lighten your hair. Dark brown hair has underlying red (and orange) pigments which are revealed when the hair is lightened with peroxide. Since your roots sound like they are about 2 levels darker than the colour of the rest of your hair, your stylist will probably use a neutral colour. I don't think he or she will need to add any red or gold. Lightening your hair 2 levels should be enough to reveal the warmth you like. As the new root colour fades, it will get subtly "warmer".

P.S. Good for you for not wanting to waste your parents' money.

P.P.S. There is no need to dye all of your hair at this point -- just your roots. Since your roots and hair are a different colour, they would each respond to the colour differently anyway. Your stylist may choose to pull the colour she uses on your roots through your hair for the last 5 or 10 minutes to subtly blend the roots with the rest of your colour. Any longer than this, though, and you'll just be incurring unnecessary damage.
