QuoteReplyTopic: Over Bleaching? Posted: December 18 2004 at 7:08pm
I have been searching and searching for a solution and I am not willing to pay 200 dollars just for it, so I'am looking for some help here.
I am naturally a brunette, one day I decided to be a blonde. Bad-a-bing bad a boom! The blonde looked awesome at first, (it was out of a box) but aftera few days, it started getting brassy and orange. So.... off I went to the salon. There I get lectured at but all and all, each woman is shocked at how in shape my hair is, after I bleached it.
250 dollars later, and about 5 hours and about 4 times bleaching my hair, (never got what I wanted from the salon. but whatever!) I'm a nice, yummy, ashy blonde. Not exactly what I was looking for but I look(ed)great... but I hated the salon and the women there seemed to look down upon me trying to be 'blonde'. Anyways, I didn't want to return, so I just did my roots myself. All and all fine. Then it started going orange again. Damn you! So I bleached it again. All is fine. Then I wanted to try and get rid of the orangey color, (at the time I couldn't get ahold of a toner) and so I thought, I'll just die it a blonde color. I don't know what I chose, but I reccomend not to do it, by yourself. My hair turned GREY! I looked like a old woman. Gawd! I couldn't walk around looking like that, so I sighed, and alas I dyed it brown. Now... it's a very light brown where it once was blonde and my true colors are shining through.
Will my hair fallout, melt, break, or become anyworse if I try and be a blonde again? (I enjoyed it emensely!) Some lady told me, I could never ever, ever bleach what I already bleached again. What!? Is this true? Does anyone recommend some suggestions on becoming a blonde again? Or do I have to wait, untill my long, long hair *past shoulder blades* grows out and I chop off all the last processed hair to be a blonde again? I'm so confused. I need to do something with this hair!!!!

First of all, I am not a professional. Everything I'm going to tell you is just based on my own experience and research.
Everyone's hair is different, but all hair has a breaking point. You've already bleached so many times. You're very lucky you haven't experienced any breakage. This doesn't mean it won't break. One more bleaching could lead you to a pixie or buzz cut. My recommendation is that you should definitely not bleach it again.
Your safest option is to leave your hair alone and let the colour grow out or go to a knowledgeable colourist who has experience in colour correction.
If you choose to try to fix the colour yourself, take the time to do some research and learn everything you can about what's involved so you can avoid further unnecessary damage.
It sounds like you were just bleaching your hair and expecting it to be a nice shade of blonde. Take a look at the Clairol website (http://www.clairol.com) and read the page about double-processing. Bleaching is called a double-process because you need to 1. bleach to your desired level -- orange, gold, yellow or pale yellow and 2. tone your bleached hair to a blonde shade.
As for your current colour, you can either live with it, darken it, or, if you still want to be blonde, remove the dye you put on it.
If you decide you want to take on the challenge of trying to go blonde again, check out this site (http://www.hair-news.com/lift-color.html.) You can use a gentle colour remover like ColorFix (available at Sally's) or Igora Modulat to remove the dyes you put on top of your bleached hair. Follow all of the package instructions carefully. It will end up a funky orange colour. At that point you need to tone your hair. I would suggest you use a gentle toner (i.e. Born Blonde) or a demi-permanent blonde shade (i.e. Natural Instincts, ColorSpa). The shade you choose will depend on the level of your hair colour after using ColorFix. You will need to choose a toner at the same level or 1 level darker. Make sure you do a strand test before putting the colour on all of your hair. (Here's some more info on toning bleached hair -- http://www.blonde-ambition.co.uk/4684.html). The toner will probably need to be refreshed every 2 to 6 weeks depending on how quickly it fades. You can also prevent the tone from turning brassy by using a purple shampoo like Silver Brights or Clairol Shimmer Lights.
When it's time to touch-up your roots, they will need to be bleached and toned to match the rest of your hair. It's important not to get any of the bleach on the areas that have been bleached before -- your hair could break. It's difficult to get the bleach only on the root area (especially in the back) so you should get a friend to help you when you're bleaching your roots.
Good luck.

Thank you soooo much for your reply. It means alot. I think I look more approprite being dark haired... even though I do like the blonde. I shall wait a few years, and maybe blonde it then. For now I'll just leave it, and then dye it to my natural. Thank you for the help it was wonderful.
I'll come back here when I decide to go blonde again. ~Bambi Lee~
If you want a natural looking blonde, you'll need to use bleach (mostly true for anyone darker than a natural medium blonde) to yellow (that looks sort of like outside of a banana peel) or pale yellow (inside the banana peel). Then use a toner (such as Clairol Creme Toners or Born Blonde Toners) to achieve pastel blonde colors. Pale yellow is if you want a true platinum blonde look, otherwise, yellow bleached hair is to prevent any brassiness often occurring with brunette and some dark blonde hair. Goes true for root touch ups, don't get bleach on dyed ends as much as possible and then re-tone using same toner on roots only, leaving the last 5 minutes or so with toner for refreshening the dyed ends.
