QuoteReplyTopic: haircolor virgin!!! questions! Posted: January 03 2005 at 4:56pm
I want to dye my hair but I'm scared! (how stupid does that sound lol) I've seen people at school and I HATE IT when your roots and the rest of your hair is a different color. I know that probably the only way of preventing that is to not dye your hair at all or maintain it very well or dye it a similar color. And if you couldn't already tell...I'm a virgin to hair coloring!!! lol. Now here come the questions: How long do you have to wait before going in for touch ups?
Is there any possible way to dye your hair w/out the roots showing but you can still tell your hair is a different color?
I'm swimming right now and my hair is kind of damaged from the chlorine. Should I wait until after I'm done swimming and my hair gets better to dye it?
Before I was swimming my hair was very fine and soft...will adding color give it more volume and thickness? And will my hair be ok b/c it is so fine if i decide to dye it?
Is maintaning your hair color (w/o the roots showing) hard?
What colors would look good in my hair?
If anyone can answer my ?'s in any way i would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance. I will try to get a good picture of me so you can answer my last question, but until then this one will have to do.
I'm the one on the left.

Your link says I can't view your album because I'm not you, so I haven't seen you.
If you get a drastic color change (like if your hair is very dark and you went platinum blonde), you'd have to do your roots about every 2 weeks to never have roots. If you went a color that wasn't very different, you'd have to do them every 3 to 4 weeks to never see them. (Your hair grows a half inch a month, so that's how much roots you would have after 4 weeks). It's not hard to do, just going in that often and having them slather some stuff on only your roots, but I've been charged $60 to just have my roots done...you may want to consider the cost and shop around at different salons to find out what they charge for roots only.
If you don't want roots, you can try discussing highlighting with your salon. A very good salon can do a good job of blending your natural growth in with your highlights so it can grow out more natural looking. You have to discuss these things in advance though before choosing your salon.
I'd wait until you were done with swimming. Chlorine will not be good for your color.
If your hair is fine, you should be careful dyeing it not to overdo it. You could damage your hair very badly doing too much to it. Adding color once should be fine, and it can give it more volume ...it does something that expands the hair shaft a little. Too much dyeing will make some fall out (not necessarily noticeable to others, but won't help with volume).
p.s. I just read what you wrote on another board about how fried your hair is from the chlorine. I definitely wouldn't dye it until that grows out.

PErsonally, I love roots. Especially on blonde, bright red, and pink, black roots can be very sexy. But once they get *too* long, they get very icky looking indeed.
One solution is to get highlights instead of all over head colour.
