QuoteReplyTopic: Going Medium Blonde Posted: January 05 2005 at 10:20pm
Hi!
My sister has decided she would like to go blonde. Her hair is almost dark brown. We think that a neutral medium blonde would probably look best on her. What level should her hair she be bleached to, and what toner to use after to achieve this? I think I''d like to go with the Wella line of toners, if anyone knows anything about these that would be great.
She also wants a few lighter blonde highlights around her face. Could the bleach on the strands she wants highlighted be left on a little longer, then tone her whole head with the same toner? Or would that end up a funky color?
For reference, this is the color she''d like to have. http://img154.exs.cx/img154/4232/medblonde2bj.jpg ">
Thanks a bunch for any help!!!

I wouldn't use that stuff from a box on her hair. If it's dark brown, it likely has red tones in it and would just turn orange. I would suggest she go to a salon.
When doing it at home, I don't personally use toner. If you do a good dye job, there's no need for it. People often use it as a fixer. To go lighter, you would have to use a dye with a green base to counter the orange that will come out, that's why I said boxed color isn't a good idea, because you don't know what base colors are in that and you likely won't get what you see on the box, especially when going from such a dark color.

Well, I was planning on bleaching.. the box color was just a reference as to what shade I am aiming for. You always have to use a toner when you bleach, or you just end up with yucky colors.
I've bleached and toned myself to a light blonde, but never a medium blonde so I don't really know what level to bleach to before toning.
Thanks for your response and yes, I agree.. no one with dark hair is ever going to get that color out of a box!
Oh well, sounds like you know more about it than I do I only speak from my own experience, (not a professional) and what I used to do was use a high lift color and developer, and choose a base to counter whatever yuckiness was coming out in my hair until I got what I wanted...no experience with bleaching then toning. Sorry!

Bleach to gold stage. You can use that box color to tone if you want. Just mix it the way the direction say to and do full head color for the time specified.
You can also use Wella if you prefer, I'd go with a medium neutral- Wella levels are different than Loreals. Preference 8 is about Wella 7.
