Your hair is fading because when you highlight it, it becomes porous. Which means that your cuticles are kind of "open" and will lose color. Whatever color you put in now will have a tendancy to fade a bit - even if you go darker. I'm not a color professional or anything, but I have hair just like yours - was born blonde and have been coloring my hair either red or dark and back again for about 10 years - my color always fades.
I do have a suggestion - you can significantly reduce color fading by using a good shampoo and conditioner. I use Pureology products. They are especially made to prevent color fading and they make your hair feel beautiful and soft. They are also vegan and not tested on any animal, if that makes a difference to you. They are excellent products and I highly recommend them!
good luck!

I have found that using semi-permanent color, like natural instincts, and leaving it on longer than the time they give works better and stays longer than permanent color. You could give that a try.
As for products, I like dove moisturizing shampoo and thermasilk color reviving conditioner, they don't give me problems with fading.
I did the same thing. I dyed it all pretty dark brown and then used Prell shampoo (which fades a ton) until it became the right shade of brown. I was lucky-- I managed to get back to my natural shade, and you couldn't see my roots growing out. Just a thought; if you want to go a bit darker, and it ends up being too dark, there are always ways to fade haircolor, too.
hey girl, d'you color your hair?

you should use permanant color as opposed to semi perm. or demi perm....stay out of the sun(or wear a hat) because it will alter the shade. Use a color protecting shampoo and conditioner duo I like Graham Webbs. Also= after you dye your hair a permanant color, You can put a clear gloss lacquer over it(basically a clear color) that will help seal it in, but keep redoing it ever few weeks.

If she's coloring back over hair that faded, using permanent every time is not a good idea. The higher level of peroxide is just gonna cause more damage and cause the hair to fade even faster.

well if she wants her color to stay, alyssa-i believe thats her best option. If she uses a permanant--she should use it in a shade darker then what shes going for and it should fade to the color she wants..She shouldnt HAVE to keep coloring over it.Use a perm. is better then repeatedly coloring over it with a semi or demi over and over again. As long as she doesnt leave it on too long, uses a professional product, and her hair is relatively healthy--she shouldnt have too much of a problem.

But if she's already having trouble with fading, wouldn't that suggest damage right there? Seems like it to me, and using a permanent with the higher volume peroxide would make the fading worse. I think if she was going lighter, permanent would be the answer, but if you're going darker, semi works just as well if not better than permanent, in my experience anyway (It even says this on the NI box if I remember correctly). I have used NI to go darker and not had to refresh the color for a good 7 weeks or so; I just let it develop more than the 10 minutes they suggest. I know not everyone is gonna have the same experience, but it surely couldn't hurt to try the semi and see.

just because her hair is fading-does not mean it is due to damage. Semi and demi permanants are MEANT to wash out. They are meant for people who dont exactly want to commit to a permanant color just in case they want to change the color at some point...So obviously, if using one of these, it is going to fade more and more as she washes her hair...yes--if her hair is in fact damaged, then i would suggest her to pick a semi one to two shades darker then what she is looking for, that way it can fade to the color she likes with out adding further damage. Fading with a semi and demi is inevitable. And, yes, they are healthier to use then a permanant..but if she keeps using them one over another then its going to damage her hair just as bad eventually. As for the result of a semi turning out better then the permanant, it depends on what brand your using....If I were her I would do it all in one process so that I would just have to touch up the roots as they grow out as opposed to touching up my entire head due to fading.

In my own experience, semi permanent color sticks better to porous or damaged hair better than permanent. And sometimes veggie (allegedly "temporary) dyes last the best. If you do use a permanent, only use a 10 volume developer. You don't want to lift out any pigment, just deposit it.
