Alright, so I naturally have dark blonde/auburn hair. I had blonde highlights for a while, but since August I've had dark auburn hair. (Nice n' Easy Natural Dark Reddish Brown.)

What I'd like to know is: is it possible to go from a fairly dark auburn to a very light auburn with blonde highlights without going to a salon? Can I use boxed colours to dye my hair so drastically and still expect good results? How many steps would I have to take? Also, has anyone had success using the L'Oreal multi-tonal Couleur Experte products and would you recommend using these to give light auburn hair blonde highlights? Will I have to bleach first?!

Any input would be appreciated. I just don't know where to start!

This would be a really tricky operation, because it's not like your hair is auburn and needs a process to give it highlights. Your hair is already processed on the colored part, and it's dyed, too. So before you can think about adding highlights, you'd have to use a color remover to remove the color from the parts you're going to highlight. You might need to lighten it some more, and then you're going to have to somehow get the roots to match, too. All without ruining your hair or doing something that might require wearing a scarf while you wait for an appointment with the color correction specialist.

Good luck. I recommend a professional consultation.

Just looking for a few good hair slaves - is that too much to ask?

OK, thanks for the advice. Since my dark auburn colour has been gradually fading to a lighter auburn I think I'll try lightening my hair by highlighting it. (?) I'm just hoping the highlights will look slightly reddish and not yellow-blonde. Ergh. I really don't want to spend money on a product, then do the strand test and find out I hate the results, but that's a better alternative than wrecking my hair...
