ok i usually do my hair a med. golden brown, at home, usually nutrisse or preference. it has always been good. so my husband says, "hey red would be sexy" and since its no big deal to change it a little, i got a semipermanent in a med. auburn. thinking, it will eventually fade out and I will be able to go back to the golden brown.and it looked good for a few days, but now it has faded, probably because the ends were more porous, and only the roots to about 3 inches are red. the remaining three inches, are faded back to the med golden brown. at this point i just want the red gone, would it be safe to do my permanent over the semi permanent? To get my old color back?

I guess it would if the brown shade has a green base in it, to bring out the brown again.

Yeah, golden brown doesn't sound like a shade that would have a green base though. I'd try washing the red parts with dishwashing liquid (then condition really well afterwards) to see if I could get as much red out as possible before dyeing it again.

I am just curious...why dishwashing liquid? I haven't heard of that before. Did it work?

i tried the dishwashing stuff. i don't think it did much good. but now my hair feels really dry. i did the deep conditioner too but it just feels icky now.i'm gonna try my husband's dandruff shampoo, maybe that is strong enough to get the red out.

Did you wash the mayo out thoroughly? Your hair should feel nice and soft afterwards, not icky. I have done this before.

If nothing gets all the red out, I would go to a salon to have my hair dyed the next time. If your roots stay red and the ends are ashy, it will be difficult to get a good color match at home. (Not impossible, but risky).

after washing with my hubbies shampoo, it did fade some more, then I used shimmer lights, thinking it might tone it down. and boy was I surprised! huge amounts of dark red dye went down the drain, both time I washed it. It was like I found the magic eraser! then I used the conditioner that comes in the Preference box, and my hair feels fantastic. only a slight reddish tint, and I'm positive the dye will cover that nicely.

Oops, your right, that was another post. Glad you worked it out with your hair!

Edited to say: I have to say I learned something here, I'm really surprised the shimmer lights made the red just run right out. That's supposed to be more of a color deposit type shampoo that puts violet tones on the hair to counter yellow. Oh well, go figure.
