I am a natural brunette--dark brown.

I want to go about 3 shades lighter, no more.

My hairdresser says that every haircolor for everyone has one of 2 properties--gold or red. Since I am a cool and not warm, then color with red undertone would be for me, not color with gold.

However, whatever color he puts on me looks golden to me in direct light. I never see red undertones, only gold. He doesn't use ash.

1) Is this information correct? Am I going to get gold no matter what ?

2) I read that cool complexions should not use anything with gold OR red, but he says that's all there is. Is that true? One or the other only?

Help! I'm having color done this weekend. Thanks soooo much!!!

I'm not a professional, so I don't really know what he's talking about. Maybe someone else here does.

When I go to Sally's to pick up a color, there are plenty of base colors to choose from. If you are a cool complexion, I'd go with an ash shade. Ash shades often have a green base. If you're going lighter, it's a good idea to use a green base anyway to make sure no orange comes out in your hair in the lightening process. Like I said though, maybe there's something I don't understand here.

Yes, that makes sense to me. I don''t understand a colorist shunning ash.

I''m so frustrated, though, because he''s our family hairdresser, though, so I have to go to him. I can''t show up one day with the kids for their cuts and have my hair a different color and style that he knows he didn''t do. I''m so chicken that way.

Thanks.
