--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know what possessed me, but for a while I've been wanting to dye my hair black. Sp sunday I went for it - and bought a blue/black permanent hair dye (as I'd tried a wash out one before and it looked fab). I dyed it all, and IT LOOKS DREADFUL. I look like a ghost and I'm ABSOLUTELY GUTTED !! I've been to the hairdressers who say that I can only have highlights put ontop to TRY and lighten it. But I have to wait 2 weeks, and even then she sed it won't do much at all. I've heard online that colourists can actually strip the colour ? Is this true ? I'm an beginner at all this, and this is definately the last time I'm ever gonna dye my hair EVER. I don't care what shade of brown I go back to, just so long as its not black anymore !!! HELP !!! What can I do ? Thanks !!

If there is a Sally beauty supply in your area, you can buy Colorfix to remove the color (NOT Effasol ur Uncolor, those contain bleach!). You may have to apply it more than once; black can be sorta hard to remove. After you've removed as much as you can, you can dye over it with a brown shade - I'd say pick one shade lighter than what you're aiming for and you will get closest to the result you want. For example, if you want a medium brown, choose a light brown, your hair will be more porous because of all it's been thru so a shade lighter will actually turn out a bit darker than usual.

Edit:
Also, if you end up with orangey tones in your hair after using the Colorfix, don't panic, that's normal, it's from the peroxide in the 1st color you used... just make sure the color you use afterwards doesn't say 'golden' or it might end up a little too warm.

note - do NOT use any bleach on your hair for a few weeks, otherwise it could reoxydize the dyes in your hair, and make it darker.

yes, its possible to "bleach" your hair black.

Ok, that sounds excellent - the only problem is that I live in England,UK. I've had a quick search on the net for colorfix and it looks like I won't be able to get it around here. I've found a product called 'Daniel Galvin's Miracle Solution Colour Corrector' which kinda looks the same thing. I think I'd prefer to have a hairdresser do it for me tho, as being 18 I'm not excatly experienced at this !!! Would they be able to do something similar ?? Thanks guys !! xx This is so much appreciated !

was it permanant? if not-try washing it with Prell shampoo for like twenty minutes rubbing your hair relaly hard between your palms..It should lighten up a couple shades.I just dyed my hair black myself in cosmetology class...The only way to go lighter is: stripping the color out...which is EXPENSIVE and can damage your hair...Adding highlights(which will have to be bleached in and recolored over..which can also be damaging) to break up the base making it less drastic. You could go to Sallys and grab a color remover which will remove the color and turn it a reddish orange so that you can recolor over it and its not damaging. Or you can bleach your head until its a few shades lighter and recolor it...People will tell you not to bleach because of the damage--but i did the same thing as you...I was a level two black and put in some caramel highlights and i love it..Its not any more noticably damaged then before(And this was the 2nd or 3rd time I bleached it as well!)It looks soooo much lighter..you would never be able to tell that it was so dark before...I had her slice in several skinny highlights in the crown area and make them thicker and more far apart as she got to the back...heres a pic: (if it doesnt show up I can email it to you)

Ohhh yes - it was indeed permanent. I went to the hairdressers who said that bleaching wouldn't work, and that the only thing I could do is highlight it ? Argh !! They recommended some shampoo which is basically, a regular shampoo but they said it can help strip the colour over a long period of time...which sucks !

kalika--you can rebleach your hair a couple days after coloring it(Although its not very healthy)--you cannot "bleach you hair darker"..where did you hear that??? ...And if they dont have colorfix there, find a salon that uses Rusk Elimin8--its a professional product that removes color without having to strip it and damage it.

Okay 'Rusk Elimin8'. Hopefully they do that over here. I'm going to a different hairdressers tomorrow - one that I've been to before so I'll ask there, and let u know what they say. Thanks for your help everyone, you are all lifesavers - no doubt I'll be back tomorrow (its nearly bed time here for me now lol) x

ok--your stylists is contradicting herself...if you can bleach in highlights then you can obviously bleach your entire head...I would only suggest the highlights though because it makes a huge difference...You dont need to go as far as the whole head to play down the black color.

Actually, you can bleach your hair black (well, darker, at least). This is most often seen with people who use a colorstripper but skip that all-important phase of adding developer to make sure they have removed all of the dye. Those who neglect that step and did not, in fact, remove all of the dye end up reoxidising the dye with the peroxide in their bleach. If the dye was dark brown or black, the color will reappear to some degree, so even though they sat with bleach on their heads for 15 minutes, their hair will be darker than when they began.

okay--I wasnt talking about "do it yourself bleach" that is something I would never ever recommend...I am saying that any professional using bleach is going to obviously use a developer..If you apply the correct procedure using bleach to your client--it will not color your hair black. If your stylists colors your hair black with bleach--you need to find a new one..
