My hair has been every color, every cut, every style imaginable in the last 10 years of my life. I am constantly changing the way it looks. I do not like keeping the same style for very long. I have coloed my hair 7 times in one day more than a few times. I have had black hair one morning and be platnium blonde by that afternoon. I just recently sit through 4 hours of color paneling on my hair with blonde, black and red panels and I have already cut my hair all off.

My question is, can your hair become dye dependant? If I color my hair regularly it stays very soft and shiny and healthy. When I stop coloring it on a regular basis it becomes dry and frizzy and aching for color. What is causing my hair to become dependant on chemicals? I have bleached my hair, stripped it, colored it, and put it through hell and high water but my hair loves me and has never broken off or turned an odd color. I normally do my hair at home but this last time I went to the salon.

I am fixing to start beauty school next month so I cannot wait. I have cut hair, colored hair, braided hair, and pretty much done everything you can think of to peoples hair for the last several years but I want to do this professionally.

I hope you treat your clients' hair better than you treat your own.

I have no clients right now because I only do friends or relatives hair and I have never had a complaint. I do not take the risk with others hair as I do my own. My hair is just that, mine. I know how much my own hair can or cant take. I refuse to do anything dangerous or risky with someone else hair.

FYI I have never mseed my hair up, never fried it, never damaged it and it has always ended up the way I want it. My hair is very healthy. Just last week when I was getting my color paneling the stylist was telling me what healthy thick hair I have and how it was so shiny and healthy.

If your hair was very healthy, it wouldn't be doing weird and unpredictable things. You should take these changes in the way your hair responds to treatment as a sign that you need to start treating your hair better if you want a long-term relationship with it.

Hair is just dead protein. The less we do to it, the better. Hair color and perms cause damage to the hair. That's what they are designed to do. Even though your hair may be exceptionally durable, it is still being damaged bit by bit. Often I have read women posters saying that their hair was in wonderful condition in spite of repeated bleachings and colorings, but suddenly it was ruined from one treatment. It just appeared to happen that way.

The next treatment could be the last for your lovely hair.

Your hair cannot become dye dependent. It is more likely another product you are using that makes it nice sometimes and dry other times.

I think that may be the case. I tend to try out new products alot and some days my hair is silky and shiny and other days it seems a tab bit on the dry side. I have to wash my hair every day because it gets very oily if I dont. After a few weeks using one product it seems to lose its effectiveness so I go to the salon and buy something different. My hair is very healthy and shiny most of the time but I also think moisture outside causes it do go crazy sometimes.

I am not worried about my hair. I have always taken good care of it and my "experiements" are just that. If one day something goes wrong I would not be shocked. It is just hair and the way I feel about it is it reflects my personality. I crave change and therefore my hair refects that. There is nothing wrong with doing alot to you hair if you know how much and when too much is too much. Me and my hair have avery personal relationship and believe me if I went too far it would tell me.

Thanks for the concern though. Anyone have any products they would love to rave about? I am always up for finding new and exciting products.

Well, for someone who likes to dye their hair a lot, and is not very concerned about how much length they have, silicone products are great! Since I want to grow mine, I only do silicone on the very ends and once a week max because I don't want buildup to cause breakage, but when I used to dye my hair I loved conditioners like Ion reconstructor, Pantene, and I hear good things about Redken All Soft (has a lot of cones in it too). All of those will probably make your hair feel nice and silky...be warned though that some curly haired people don't like silicones because it adds to the frizz problem....but then again using a little jojoba oil (1-2 drops is usually enough), spread through your hair brings out shine and reduces the frizz. I've found using both makes for super soft hair!
Hope some of this was useful.

I think its urself that's become colr-dependant not ur hair! I understand.
I suggest using a product by wella called "Wella Lifetex hair repair serum"...it works wonders for my frizzy hair and it actually helps make my ends feel nice. Its great for color treated hair and maintains and improves the hair's texture (and resiliency in a sense)
For some reason it aslo reduces frizz greatly altho that's not wht its meant for.
Anyways, I can sympathize w/ u, unfortunately hair coloring is more of an addiction for those who can't stop doing it like me and u.

Hi I totally understand where your coming from, I am also a Hair dye Freak!! they call me teh color queen. I have also dyed my hair 7-8 times a day, I mean I have really resistsnat hair and I have done this since I was 15 yrs old, and i have never been bald, or lost a large amount of hair

anyway I condition my hair alot, and cannot keep the same color for too long! I get bored not sure why but my mom is the same way, in my case its heriditary!

I mean my friends and family and everyone that works at my docs office knows that everytime they see me I will have a new hair color, and hair style, I guess this is just part of who I am, my hair is pretty shiny and healthy, I guess everyone cannot do this kind of thing and get away with it, But I definately can, and will continue to do it because it brings excitement in my life, especially since everytime I change my hair I change my makeup and its just fun!

my husband is so used to seeing me with different hair colors that when he sees a hair color he likes at the drug store he brings it home so I can dye my hair that color!

as a mom of 2 small kids I have to take time for myself, I love looking good and It makes me feel great when I get a new cut or hair color!

Vanessa you and me sound a lot alike. I have 3 kids and they are very used to seeing mommy change. I HATE being the same for long and I CRAVE change, wether it be my hair color, cut, cloths, cars, etc. If I can change it. I WILL. I think as long as I am not hurting anyone or making my family unhappy it is all good. I like being different and usually lean towards hair color/cuts that stand out. I cut over 6 inches off last week and Im still thinking about going shorter. I just spend 140.00 on the hair color I have and then cut it mostly off. I normally do my own coloring but I could not do the color paneling on my own head so I opted for the professionals.

My family, who lives over an hour away, are never suprised anymore when they see me one week with pink hair, long and then the next short red or black hair with blonde tips. They are used to me being different. I too have been coloring my hair since age 15 and I could not tell you what my natural color is although I was a blonde before age 15 lol.

My hair is relatively healthy, other than when I go swimming etc and chlorine tends to dry it out but it is shiny, soft, and everyone raves on how healthy it is after all I have done to it. Me and my hair have a bond and unless my hair tells me enough is enough, I will continue to do the imaginable!

I am thinking of going with this cut. Any comments. Here is a pic of my coloring now but my hair is alot shorter after last weeks cut. Comments on cuts?

The redhaired girl is a friend of mine and I want to get her hair cut in her pic. My color is black and blonde panels with black and red paneling in the back.
