For those who want some ideas on extensions, check this site out. It has SO many photos of some wonderful looking applications. The synthetic extensions blow me away. Has anyone ever tried them? How long do they last? Man, look at these girls hair... WOW!!!

Yeah, her work looks really good. Wasn't someone on these boards looking for an extensionist in Seattle?

What's interesting is, if you read her price list page, she really recommends using synth hair over human because she thinks it looks much better.

I love the loose waves in this pic: http://www.boogiemama.com/album/displayimage.php?album=1&pos=29

Yummy indeed!

I keep going over there and looking at those synthetic photos. Those light blondes are stunning. So so shiny and smooth.

Can anyone give their thoughts on this? I wonder what type she uses and why she prefers it over human. I know some people are vibed out by hair that was snipped off someone but I always thought synth hair balled up in a month or less.

Please chime in someone...

My Falls are synthetic and I love them personally. I love how they blend with my hair and it doesn't tangle.

It's difficult to use heat on fusion hair so you have to be careful. Some you can use low settings, others you have to do the hot water method and some no heat whatsoever.

Hair dryers fry the hair so you have to let it air dry if you want it to last.

A lot of black women use the synthetic yaki because it blends nicely with black hair, better than most remy and human hair sold on the market.

It's also really cheap. like 12 bucks a pack.

I can only chime in based as what I've read; I've never actually used synth hair, so for more info., you might want to post on Quinnster's under the Loose section (many of the girls there use synth and are quite knowledgable).

Generally, I've heard that high-quality synth (not the jumbo beauty-supply versions, but the higher quality stuff like Monofilament and, to some extent, Kanekalon--distributed by Dome, Prostyles, Hairpolice, and Plastikhaar) is, in fact, better than low-quality human (now, how you define low-quality human is a whole 'nother story). Mark Glenn in London also swears by synth over human, and you should check out the photos on their site, too: http://www.markglenn.com

That said, every stylist I've ever had has said that human is better, so I think it depends on a variety of factors. Many people like to use synth for highlights and streaks, but not for a full head. These are the advantages and disadvantages, as far as I can tell.

Synth Advantages:
1. Predictability: As long as you order the same brand, you'll always get the same thing. Straight is stick-straight, wavy is wavy, and curly is curly (I imagine these textures hold fairly well over time, but I don't really know); and the colors are standard.
2. Color range and length: Synth is available in every color of the rainbow (natural and crazy colors) and in superlong lengths.
3. Methods you can use: Synth seems to hold better with loc-ing techinques like microrings, since the hair doesn't shrink when washed, and there's no porosity to it. It is also often used with the Dome method, because it can be heat-sealed in on itself, theoretically without damaging your real hair. (That said, the Dome method requires two people and can be quite tricky to learn.)
4. Price: Synth is way cheaper.
5. Weight: Synth is lighter.
6. Cleanliness: Synth doesn't absorb anything, so theorectically, it would stay cleaner than human hair.

Synth Disdvantages:
1. Not as real-looking: (Again this is debatable and depends on the hair you're using, but a lot of people still feel that fibre just isn't as real looking as human hair.) Many also don't think that it feels as soft.
2. Heat styling: Although people say can heat-style high-quality synth, I think that dryers, curling irons, and flatirons are not recommended because they could fry the fibre. Some say you can use all these tools, if they're on the lowest setting.
3. Color: You can probably touch up your roots with synth, but fibre will not pick up color, so you can't dye them once their in.
4. Tangling: Fibre hair has been known to tangle a lot (but I don't know if it's any worse than human for tangling, though). You need to use a lot of silicone spray.
5. Flammability: Beware of lit cigarettes, candles, firplaces, and even hot ovens, which could fry the hair. (Once it's fried, there's nothing you can do to rehabilitate it.)

My biggest concern about synth is how it would look after a few months' time. I've seen some synth applications that look downright awful, but that may have been because the hair wasn't high-quality enough. Hairpolice, Dollylocks, Pretty Eclectic, Lucinda Ellery, and Angelemma all do human and synth, too, so it may be helpful to check out their websites.

The idea of having someone else's hair on my head doesn't really creep me out or anything, but the politics behind the hair trade are pretty shady. I've read that the overwhelming majority of the hair does come from prisoners, dead people, temples, and sacrifices, which is troubling, I have to say....

Someone just posted on Quinnster's that Bridget (the extensionist who's site we're discussing) uses ProHair; I think it's actually called ProStyles.

Oh cool.

I went on the Dome webite where the good monofibre stuff is and the shipping is unbelievable. It's like $25 for one order. You have to order several bags for the shipping to pay for itself.

Forget that!

My pet peeve is shipping costs. It burns my @ss when I pay outrageous shipping and it doesn't cost that much to send. Flat rate priority mail envelopes are only $3.85 and flat rate shipping boxes are $7.70 regardless of weight. They're free from the post office and they even come pick it up right off your doorstep.

Grrrrrrrr. Ok, that's my rant. :/

Wow, that's so expensive. Where did you find the hair, anyway? I've been to the DOME site, but it looks like it's all for professionals only. Do they sell hair to individual customers. Maybe I've been looking on the wrong one. Are Dome and Prostyles the same company, or are they different?
