QuoteReplyTopic: Thinking about doing this again in So Cal...need some support :) Posted: December 26 2004 at 9:23pm
Hi all,
I am considering getting extensions put in for a third time. the first was in norfolk va about 10 years ago...done by a very talented woman who wasn't used to my caucasian hair. looked great, hurt like a ^%#. second time was about 3 years ago at a salon outside of boston...horrid horrid experience. i had to drive 4 hours to get there to do it...and then 4 hours home and 4 hours BACK to have them removed. they used crappy hair and the technique was pretty shoddy. i convinced them to refund me for the hair at least!
the previous 2 times were done for vanity...this time is a bit different. (insert long story here) and i'm so stressed my hair is thinning and breaking. i want to do something that will improve the look of my hair while i get my life in gear...and stop the stressing that led me here in the first place.
i guess i'm wondering what methods are recommended for fine hair. also, does anyone know if there are any trade schools that would perform this service? in truth, i should not be spending money on such a thing...so the least expensive way to go is the best.
thanks everyone.

Thin, fragile hair makes you a poor candidate for professionally done hair extensions. When the extensions come out, your hair will be thinner and in worse condition than when you had them put in.
Why don't you read down this board about shrinkies? They're DIY, and it looks like they cause little or no damage.
At the same time, you need to straighten out your diet and start conditioning and oiling your hair. Don't wait til you've removed the causes of stress from your life. Eating a bad diet and abusing your hair could be causing all your problems.
Just looking for a few good hair slaves - is that too much to ask?
Actually, my hair isn't fragile. It's fine, big difference. my diet is just fine, and i exercise daily. i do not abuse my hair. stress has many faces! i've been with this hair for 30 years, and i certainly know HOW to damage it if i want to ;) and you know what, maybe my hair getting finer hasn't a thing to do with stress...maybe it's another bonus of age.
regardless, i'll check out the shrinkies---and thanks for the head's up. but oiling my hair? not the best idea for fine hair. i can see it now, flat and slick to my head lol.
Shrinkies, extendtubes, and pinchbraids might all be possibilities. You should test a few strands first, though. Shrinkies and extendtubes you could do yourself with a little practice (they'll each cost about $300 to $400 for the tools and the hair), but for pinchbraids, you'd need to go to a salon or pinchbraider (which would probably cost about $500 to $700 for a full head); this all depends on what kind of hair you want, of course, as well as where you're located.
If I were you, I wouldn't even consider getting Great Lengths, Cinderella, Mega Hair, Icy, Monkey Bars, any other type of fusion, or keratin bonds, or Hairlocs/Eurolocs; you're hair is too weak, imo, for those methods, and many of them are really expensive. I also wouldn't recommend wefts, but this is just based on what I've read; I don't have any personal experience with them.
As eKatherine said, even the gentlest extensions methods will not improve the condition of your hair in and of themselves. They may help as a temporary fix, but only if your hair is able to improve itself in the meantime, and that's a big "if." I use extensions because, realistically, I think I'll continue to have them for many years because my real hair is so crappy. But if you're only planning to wear them short term, they might not be worth the effort and expense. Of course, theoretically the less time you have them in, the less damage they'll do (this does not apply to fusion or any of the other brands listed above, which would probably kill your hair after one wearing).
Anyway, if you decide to go with extensions, good luck! But you might also want to think about other options, such as falls, wigs, jaw-clip ponytails, clip-ins and the like. They're much less expensive, require less commitment, and are usually much less damaging than extensions.

I put a few drops of jojoba through my ends and around the hairline after every wash, and another drop or two of coconut oil or cocoa butter on the ends daily. My hair is the finest imaginable. You're right, it seems to be getting finer with age. Oiling has improved the condition of my hair greatly.
..my hair is thinning and breaking...
If you didn't intend for this to be interpreted as "fragile", sorry.
