I would really appreciate it if someone could give me information on where to buy the tools and supplies (copper bonds) for doing maint on my own Hairlocs? I'm getting kind of tired of paying $500.00 every 2 1/2 months for maint and then paying another $200.00 in between maint to have all the locks that have fallen out re-installed. Please direct me to a website or store. I live in Riverside California.
Thanks girls

The copper shells you use are located here (there is no other US site that offers them that I know of):

http://www.extrahiuxet.com/index.php?id=15

Write them an email, they are very helpful and you can communicate in English with them. They have no Hairlocs tool online that opens the locs but they offer pliers that will do the same thing. You can always pick up pliers locally, though. Get the kind with the spring loaded action in the handles. They are so worth it!

If you'd like another alternative, hairpiece.com sells their own microrings which are some of the best offered online: http://www.hairpiece.com/product.asp?pf_id=XTN400

You install, maintenance and remove exactly the same as Hairlocs but at a fraction of the price.

Amm: If those shells are copper, do you think they'll tarnish like Hairlocs do?

Personally, I'd go with the hairpiece extendtubes, unless those have some sort of special coating or something.

Amm: I PMed you on the other site. Did you get it?

:)

And whoa, Lisa: You're going back like once a month, and they won't even reinstall the fallen ones for free? That's total garbage.

Jenny, I will check the other site. I keep forgetting about the PM stuff these places offer. I'll check it right now. :)

You know my feelings about copper shells. Blegh. They ruin hair. Look at those ones on that link I provided and tell me those aren't Hairlocs shells. Are they not Hairlocs shells? If you look at the English Summary link on that site, it specifically says they're copper. The photo shows silver shells but it must be a resolution problem because they offer them in black, brown, blonde, etc. They have that same elongated shape and that rim on the top. I was stunned when I saw them because I never saw them available to the public like that. This may be Hairlocs source. And I bet they tarnish and break down hair cuticle just like I've researched.

Also, those shells are almost 25 cents each, PLUS postage from Finland. The extentubes are about 5 cents each. What a price difference!

Lisa Lisa, there's a great extentionist on this board named Kristin who is only an hour away from you. She can do your microring strand by strand and be saving you SO much money. You are definitely being overcharged.

Can you just use small pliers from a hardware store (smooth for putting in ridged for taking out) or do I have to buy the kind online?

Hey Amm, Actually Kristen contacted me about a month ago after I posted my horrible experience on this site (OK! NOW IM REALLY PISSED). You might remember it. I would just rather be able to do all the maintenance myself. It doesn't seem like pliers would work because they don't have the parts on each end that actually open the shell from each side. Maybe I should switch to something else. Amm, what are you currently using for extensions and are you doing them yourself? If so, where are you buying your supplies?
And Jennifer, after my last experience with maintenance I have changed stylists and I will be going to somebody new on Friday to have the longer extensions put in. But last week I was desperate and had to have somebody else put in the extensions that had come out. It makes me sick to be spending so much money on this. I had the girl put back only 32 bonds and it took her 2 hours. She is new at it and it took forever. I don't think she has any business charging $200.00 and hour when she has only been doing it for 1 month and is so slow. If I had half a brain I would say to hell with all this and just live with my hair looking like crap until it grows out............ but I can't stand the way it looks, so I will just have to live with the expense. Thanks girls!

I took out all my old Hairlocs shells just fine with regular pliers. Gently opening, moving them back up the hair strand and reclosing is possible.

Yes, I do my own. My own experiences, what I use and where I get my supplies and photos of my hair are on this board. Do a quick search and you'll find it easily.

Kristin does microlink and can help you so I don't know why you think you have no other options.

I don't know what more I can add.

You don't have to "live with the expense," Lisa. The amount you're paying is insane, and there's nothing special about the hairlocs hair or locs; the extendtubes from hairpiece.com are just as good--in fact, better, because they don't tarnish. It's not like you're even happy with the job these stylists are doing for you.

Instead of continuing to pay thousands, invest $99 in the starter kit from hairpiece.com: http://www.hairpiece.com/product.asp?pf_id=APE151 Order 250 of each size in your hair color. Then, you'll have all the tools you'll need and enough extendtubes for several applications.

You can use the hair you already have from hairlocs with this technique, and when it's time for you to replace the hair, you can order your own hair online for a fraction of the hairlocs price.

It's really that simple, Lisa. There are tons of online tutorials to help you, and it's absolutely not necessary to have that double-pronged removal tool; in fact, some people claim it causes more damage to use that than pliers.

With extendtubes, you'll still probably have some slippage, but you'll have the supplies to reinstall them yourself. If you want to switch to a method that doesn't slip as much, you may want to think about using shrinkies at some point. But for now, I would try the extendtubes--the quickest and easiest method of extensions on the market.

Good luck!
