I haven`t had a trim for almost 2 months and I really don`t want to get a trim because I am paranoid. I don`t have a trustworthy hair stylist. My hair is damaged from bleaching in the past. I have decided to let it grow out long, and in my natural color. There are sections of my hair that have completely broken off, due to an incompetent hair colorist. My question is, I don`t know how to tell hair breakage from split ends. I seem to have a lot of breakage everywhere, but I can`t see any individual strands that are split. I would really like to go an entire year without any trims at all. Does anyone think this will cause more harm than good to my hair? I have been treating it very gently since I have decided to grow it. I wash it less, don`t blow dry, and I use a boars hair brush (I recommend it highly to anyone wanting to grow their hair) and the breakage seems to have stopped. Thanks!

Hi Crystal,

I know how terrible it is to have ruined by an incompetent person. I tried to go a whole year without a trim and wound up needing to have more hair trimmed at the end to remove the split ends. Now I get my hair trimmed every 8-10 weeks AND I use a good hair trimming scissors at home (Cricket) to keep the split ends down to a minimum. If you let your hair go without trims there is a danger that the split ends will travel up your hair cuticle and then cause even more damage ultimately. Why not shop around and find a trustworthy stylist and ask them to help you carefully and slowly get your hair back into shape.

If you really don`t want to go back to a stylist why not start trimming your own end. Be sure to get a good scissors though. Do not use a paper scissors or a dull scissors. This will just cause your hair to rip even more.

Hair that is breaking off will usually occur from the root to the middle of the hair shaft. Split ends are ends that form tiny splits. Sometimes you can have split ends that have multiple splits.

Hope that helps.

Please keep posting your comments and questions. They are much appreciated.

Best wishes,
Karen
