Hi all. I am not a hairdresser, but this board seems like a good place to ask some hair advice. Several months ago, I got a short, Meg Ryan-style cut. I had shoulder length hair previously. The new cut is cute as can be, however, I sure do miss the versatility of longer hair. Would extensions give me that versatility to do updos, French twist, and even have a bit of volume around the neck area again? Presently, my hair is chin length in front, graduating to shorter, choppy nape and back layers. It's fine in texture, a bit of highlighting, and in very good condition. I live in Pittsburgh, PA and several salons offer extensions. (My stylist doesn't, but I intend to consult her on this--I'm loyal, but I also believe in researching the topic) Each Pittsburgh salon, I am sure has difference types and expertise. What should I look for? Is it possible to do what I'd like and get some shoulder-length hair back? My longest back layer is probably only 1-2" long, so will it work? Any and all comments are welcome.
You may be able to get extensions, but imo, you will not have as much versatility (in terms of updos and such) as you would with naturally long hair. Personally, I've never been able to pull off a French twist or anything like that with extensions, but I imagine it depends on your natural hair type and the method used. Most extensions will give you more volume, though.
Anyway, if you post some pics or links, I'm sure we can come up with some recommendations. In addition, any information you can add about your real hair type (fine/coarse, thin/thick, straight/wavy/curly, color-treated, damaged, healthy, highlighted, etc.) would be helpful, because what works on each person is different and highly dependent on the various qualities of their real hair.
it would be helpfull to see some pics, but off the top of my head, i say,enjoy your new haircut and when you want to wear an up do fake it. you can pull whatever hair you can in the back into a tiny ponytail. if the sides dont pull bAck all the way use bobbypins or haicombs or barrets. then secure a "piece" right on top of the ponytail. you can find all different types at beauty supply houses that sell hair. i think they are even selling some at drug stores! they come in different stlyes.maybe get a ponytail and twist it then stick a hair clamp on it . thats cute. anyway, it sounds like your hair will grow fast and to put extensions on it might not be the best idea because there is so much care for them and they are costly. with "pieces" you can clip different styles on and have fun with the haircut you already have. talk about versatility!!!!
I have to third the hairpiece idea, because I own a bunch of them, and they're fabulous. I would avoid the really cheapie ones they sell at Target and Walgreens, only because the colors mostly aren't very realistic--they're very one dimensional. However, a lot of malls have little shops or kiosks that sell these (at least they do in California). We've got a bunch that sell some great synthetic pieces for $20-$30. I have claw clip, banana clip, and drawstring pieces--all curly, as my real hair is straight--and people can't believe they aren't real.
