I would like to get hair extensions, but not sure what would be the best. My hair is colored and highlighted, so I believe the micro ring or Hairlocs would be the best for me. Does anyone have suggestions or experiences with each? Cost? Thanks so much!

Hi, and welcome!

What's best for you really depends on several factors, including your real hair (fine/coarse, thin/thick, straight/wavy/curly, color-treated, damaged, healthy, short/medium/long, etc.), and the look you want to achieve.

If you can provide photos of your hair currently and how you would like it to look, that would be helpful--if not actual photos of you, then Internet screengrabs that look similar to your hair now and the hair you want.

In addition, how much do you want to spend? Do you want to do it yourself or get it done at a salon? What are your top priorities--versatility, security, length, thickness, no damage, etc.?

I would recommend that you begin by reading these threads, which will give you a basic overview of the various methods used as well as related links:

I've had Hairlocs, microrings, and extendtubes (the last two are basically the same thing, but different manufacturers), and I would really NOT recommend Hairlocs. There are tons of threads here that outline the problems many women have had with them. Of the loc-ing/linking options, extentubes (from hairpiece.com) are the best chioce, imo.

That said, there are many other methods that may be worth exploring, too.

Good luck! :)

Thanks for the information...it's really overwhelming! :)

My hair is past my shoulders, coarse, been straightend, colored and highlighted. Not in horrible shape, but I do use a lot of heat on it. Caucasian hair. I would love to get the Angelina Jolie look. I've been to pretty much all of the websites that have been recommend on this board.

Have anyone tried the Tube-X hair extensions on hisandher.com? I ordered some fun highlights from Haircandy.net to try out the micro-ring technique, but I think I want to use the "shrinkie" method. I'm getting from the board the Dr. Locks has the best shrinkies, but who has the best hair? I definitely want the pre-tipped kind.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Well, pretipped hair doesn't have the best reputation, unfortunately. You'll get better quality if you buy in bulk or weft, then tip your own. You'll also have more flexibility in terms of textures, lengths, and even colors.

If you want an Angelina Jolie look, I assume you want quite long hair with a loose wave. Straight off the bat, you should know that getting a good wave with human hair is hard! (Ironically, getting stick-straight human hair is also hard.) Amm has had some success with Glamourhair and a few other wavy brands, I think, and Rose and she are in the process of ordering Bliss, but the jury's still out on that.

The problem is, with human hair, the waves aren't generally those loose big-barrell waves--the hair may look like that when it's new, but after washing it usually looks more like an S-wave, which is fine if that's what you want.

If you're interested in synth, I would definitely recommend PlastikHaar or Dome.

As far as the Tube-x, I've never used them and they were only just introduced a few months ago, if that. So I'm not sure if you'll be able to find anyone who has used them. The best shrink option at this point looks like Doc's shrinkies, applied with Doc's heat wand, Liquid Gold, and standard drugstore nail glue.

Good luck! :)

Thanks, Jenny. I can't believe how much information you have! I just posted another thread asking if anyone has heard of Ultratress...tape extensions? I think I might just have to try a few different options to see what works best. Thanks!

Yeah, I've heard of Ultratress, too. To my knowledge, they're fairly standard miniwefts; I'm not sure how the price compares with other comparable products. :)
