QuoteReplyTopic: I want my hair long! Posted: January 10 2002 at 4:55pm
Ok I`ve been trying forever to get my hair to grow. I`ve done my research and tried just about anything except for those really expensive vitamins they sell. Like I`m going to pay 40 bucks for one months supply.. that`s outta this world! Anyways... I take B vitamins, E, & Pre-Natal because I heard it`s good for your hair. I deep condition it and get it trimmed every 4 weeks. Awhile back I had a bad bleaching job on it so it got kinda dead.. but it`s getting better now! My hair just brushes my shoulders and I want it to be maybe a tiny bit above mid-back. My boyfriend is away in the war.. he`ll be gone for a year. Your hair grows 6 inches a year if your lucky right? Well, I WANT that six inches to be in the best condition.. and I don`t want my hair to break off so that it doesn`t get that long! What can I do? I need the best advice anyone has! lol if there`s anyone that obsesses over hair... it`s me... so I came to a place where other people obsess over it to! lol *smiles* Please help me! Oh yeah.. When I was in forth grade my hair was past my shoulders... so I should be able to grow my hair longer than what it is now.. according to the whole genetics thing .. right?

I`ll be the first one to admit the importance of trimming hair! However, every four weeks seems quite often, unless one has a short haircut and needs to maintain the shape. Do you have a lot of split ends after four weeks? If you`re conditioning your hair well and not using excessive heat on it, I bet it`s fairly healthy and can go longer between trims.
Also, does your stylist understand your goal? Some stylists are very good at taking off only the absolute minimal that is necessary and others are a bit more liberal. And 1/4 inch here and there adds up!
How often do you wash your hair?

YOu can easily buy hair vitamins at a health food store and not worry about the cost. Maybe it will cost you $ 10.00 or so. It contains everything that you will need or you can easily purchase a good bottle of vitamins. Please , please stay away from the prenatal stuff. Don`t pollute your body when your body doesn`t need it. IN the hair vitamins you will also find silica which strengthens hair. You will also find your B vitamins and the ones that help us when we are stressed etc.
Well, I registered here... this is my new name.. I`m still Amber!
Ok... I wash my hair every other day. But I must admit not to long ago I was washing it every other day. I have been told that it`s bad for my hair to wash it everyday.. but it seems when I DON`T wash it everyday.. it gets a little greasy... YUCK & I hate that!
My beautician said that I should get it trimmed every 4 weeks so I can get the dead ends off. She knows HOW VERY PICKY I AM when it comes to trimming ALOT off. She just nips the very ends. Yes, I must admit my ends are still split some. Velvet.. (my beautician) is working on getting all the split ends off so that my hair won`t break and it will be able to keep length when it grows instead of breaking off.
Oh & another thing.. I use to blow dry my hair everyday also. I`ve been letting it air dry on days I don`t see anyone... and particially dry and then blow dry on days that I will be seeing people.. but on a low warm setting.
How often do you recommend me getting my hair trimmed? Growing hair out takes much patience & lots of tender loving care. I wish it would grow more fast... for I am very impatient! (o;

Amber your sentiments really hit home because I can easily understand you and really relate to what you are going through. I normally wash my hair everyday and lately because it is winter I tend to wait if I can wash it every second day. I enjoy fresh, shinny hair and cannot stand any type of hair that is greasy looking. I have weak stomack on that subject lol (YOu should have seen the professor I had once.....) I never felt that it damage my hair, in fact if I don`t wash it often it tends to tangle more, gets frizzy etc. I have thick, wavy hair down to my waist.

This seriously reminds me of the drunk stylist I had. My hair tends to grow very slowly and my old stylist use to trim my hair every 4 weeks. At the time I never felt that my hair was growing. What was really going on was whatever growth I had that month was trimmed away by the stylist. If you feel you can stretch it a bit longer the better for you. A long hair stylist that had long hair down to her hips told me once that long hair can be trimmed every 4 months. I believe that. OKay maybe not everyone can stretch it to that point and it all depends on how much abuse your hair gets etc but Amber I certainly stretch it that way and that is the ONLY REASON WHY i HAVE LONG HAIR TODAY! ( with lots of giggles)

I haven`t used a hairdryer for years. Hairdryers are horrible for your hair. Try to use it rarely.
Amber it takes tons of patience. It takes lots of understanding from everyone at times also.
Well, see.. if I don`t use a blow dryer my hair gets all flat. And another sin.. I use a curling iron!! agghh! lol I`m beginning to think my hair has no hope at all. Does anyone know about the vibrating brush and egg? No one had answered that.... Thanks so much for the help that has been given though!
There are tons more long hair helping tips and articles in this site.
You can also do a long hair word search in any of the search boxes on each pages and you will find lots of other long hair related topics & great info. What a lot of people may not realize is that HairBoutique.com is run by two people (Karen & Jeff) with gorgeous long hair below their waists and there is more stuff about long hair here than even on some of the sites that are specifically touted as long hair.
Good luck with your growing. All the folks on this board will offer you support and guidance. Hang in there and post often.
