QuoteReplyTopic: EXTENTUBE..HOW MANY? Posted: February 26 2005 at 2:13pm
Okay, I've been reading your boards for weeks, can I just say, as the ultimate compliment, that I thought black women had the hair weave thing on lock (it seems that in black communities, we women have a serious love/hate relationship with extensions)! BUT you ladies are so smart, so open, so creative, and so willing to share everything you know, it blew me away!!! I spend hours (at work) =O reading your posts. You ladies have opened my eyes to techniques I never knew existed, and JennyRR, you should be a world famous hairstylist. Just travel from state to state, giving lectures/demos...I'd pay to see you! ANYWAYS, now that I'm done pandering, I have purchased extentubes, but I am worried that I don't have enough. They are the small size, and I have 500. I have very very very thick hair, and usually use 2 1/2 packs (10-12 oz) of hair when I do my weaves (I also like it my added hair very thick) I was also wondering if you think it's better to buy wefted hair, cut it and add a little glue to the tip, or buy the pre-tipped hair (even tho it might have to be cut in half to go inside a small tube) please respond asap, i would like to start on this soon!!
THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE! javagirl

Hi javagirl and welcome to the board! And yes you're right about Jenny-RR she is loaded with great information! I dont know about the small extendtubes since I have never used nor seen the small ones. It seems the majority of people prefer to buy either wefted or bulk hair of their liking and pretip their own because they cannot find the quality in pre-tipped hair.
Welcome! That's great that you've been reading the boards at work--in a sense, you're getting paid to learn about hair, which sounds heavenly to me. And I hear you about the love/hate extensions relationship. I don't think that this relationship is nearly as politically, culturally, or historically charged for white women as it is for black women obviously, but I think most of us can relate to it somewhat. Before I got extensions, it was basically a hate/hate relationship with my own hair; now it's a love/hate thing, so I suppose that's something--lol.
And by the way, there's no chance of me becoming a world-famous stylist: I'm not a hairstylist at all (or particularly good at doing my own hair, for that matter); I'm just a hair freak, really.
Onto the tubes....those small size ones are SO tiny, and 10 to 12 ounces is a whole lotta hair. I assume with this application--and someone who's done a lot of extendtubes please chime in--1/4 sections are not the recommended amount. I would think you'd need to section the hair in about 1/8 inch sections or smaller; otherwise you'd get a stringy, sparse look. So, if that's the case, perhaps you can plan on using about 500 (which is a whole lotta tubes) and a maximum of 600. I say a maximum of 600 because, honestly, I doubt you'd be able to get many more than that on your head (you'd run out of room). Again, this is largely conjecture so others should really weigh in here, too.
Good luck, and please do keep us posted. I'll be curious to see how it turns out because I have some fairly large connections now and am having some piecey-ness issues with them and if I wanted to go with smaller connections, like small-size extendtubes, I'd probably need to do what you're doing and install like a million because I really like the hair to be thick, too. :)
Hmm. I've never used the small-size tubes, but I've only ever been able to fit 250 of the regular-size ones onto a head- so I think twice that many of the smaller size should be enough. I'm just guessing, though.
Hello Javagirl; I, like you, have been a closet reader of this site. I was glad to find that there are others like me with strands of other people's hair stuffed in drawers, hair plyers, color rings and hair latchhooks strewn all over the bathroom counter, and highly developed shoulder muscles from applying, removing and reapplying extensions. I have used the small tubes and I will offer a word of caution...I found them to be a challenge to remove. Also make sure you have a needle small enough to allow smooth application. The regular size doesn't allow them to slip off easily. I now only use them in more visible areas ie around the hairling and close to the part and stick with the regular size otherwise.

Yeah, those little ones are SO small, and they're definitely harder to remove. I've only done random strands here and there with them, but just based on that, it would be really time-consuming to do a whole head, although I imagine the results would be great. There's no way I could do the back of my head with them (I'm pretty uncoordinated though :) )
Rae: I would be surprised if more than 500 were needed too, but seriously, they're so tiny that I think it's actually possible. If you want, I can send you a few with that other thing so you can see the size.
