Angelina`s style was applied to "day old" hair so that the natural oils would help keep the twists from slipping out easily. This style does not work on freshly shampooed hair.
Angelina`s hair was divided into 1 inch sections, around her head, from ear to ear and each strand was clipped up and off the head so that each section could be twisted individually.
To work on each individual section unclip and a work a hair wax, paste or grease down the length of the hair strand from about 1/4th inch from the roots to the very ends of the strand.
The best product is paste because some hair wax can become difficult to remove w/ shampoo and grease can get oily w/ some other hair types. Paste is a good solution when you can find it. It doesn`t get greasy and it will wash out fairly easy.
Take a little hair paste, apply it to the palms of your hands then warm and soften by rubbing your palms together. Take the index and middle finger of your hand and use them to glide the paste down the hair shaft coating the hair evenly from top to bottom (remember not to apply directly to the scalp area).
It is important to note that a little goes a long way. Less is definitely better than more.
After the paste is applied well to the selected section of hair, twist the strand clockwise until the entire strand is twisted. Avoid twisting too tightly or the strand will be more prone to unwind. After you have the twist the way that you want it, attach a small alligator clip to the bottom to hold the twist in place.
Work from side to side of your head and twist each strand individually until all hair is twisted and clipped. You can buy tiny plastic alligator or claw clips at most stores pretty inexpensively. In a pinch you can use small hairpins to hold the twist temporarily while you work but they don`t work as well as the tiny claw or alligator clips. Some people will tie invisible thread at the bottom to hold the twists. This can work but be tricky if you are doing the hair yourself.
After the entire hair is twisted use a good hairspray and spray well focusing the spray on the middle and ends of the hair. Leave the clips in as long as possible and then remove a few to see if the twists remain in place. If so, remove all the clips and you have the Jolie "Gone in 60" look.
Do not use mineral oil, vaseline, beeswax or dreadlock wax (like KnottyBoy) or heavy hair wax to create this style or you may never be able to remove the twists w/out cutting. Also, never leave this style in place more than 48 hours w/out washing or tangles can result. There is a reason but that is a whole other topic for some other board.
