I have naturally medium brown hair. I had two different blond color hi-lights added in the spring 9no bleach just lift). Well, Yesterday I decided to go back to my natural brown color, but I didn't realize my hair was extra porous now so it REALLY grabbed the colr. Its looks black with dark red/burgandy hi-lights in the sun. Should I just wait until it fades some? Its really too harsh for me, I'm normally a medium golden brown. I did one thing right & got a golden color so it didn't turn green. But I want to just go back & get the Light Golden brown ( I used the medium golden thinking it was my exact match). Is that a good idea, does anyone know, or will it turn some wierd color?
You are never going to believe this, but I am going through the same exact thing with my hair. I had my hair which was dirty blonde/light brown naturally with some light blonde highlights darkened recently.
My hair was very porous also from the highlights. What I wanted was a medium copper-brown. What I got was black with auburn high-lights. Did you use Semi-Permanent haircolor? Well if you did, it will fade in time(2-6 weeks). That was probably the only good thing my stylist did. The best thing you can do, which I was told to do, is wait it out, but use home remedies to speed-up the fading process. You don't want to do anything that will damage your hair futher. Shampooing frequently with volumizing shampoo will help the hair fade faster (don't bye the one for color-treated hair it will only help the color stay in). Make sure you use a deep conditioner if you decide to shampoo often because it will dry your hair out.
Well, I hope this helps. I know exactly what you are going through.

Because your hair was so porous it really grabbed the color that you used as you already know. One thing about tint and something that you need to remember is that "tint will not lift or lighten tint". So when you speak of going to buy the light golden brown color and placing it over the medium brown color that you already used - guess what - even though it is a lighter shade of brown it will darken you hair some more because it will be another application of color over color. One thing you might consider is having highlights placed over this new color and waiting for it to fade from its darkness to a lighter shade of brown or consider going to a salon and having them do a color correction by removing the dark color from your hair and actually starting over with the color that you really want. My advice however is not to place anymore tint over the tint you already have on your hair. Good luck. Forest
Your posts are always so helpful. Well, of course your right. I got impatient waiting for responses so I bought a few other colors. But, I only did strand tests with them so I didn't subject my hair to more coloring. No difference in the tests. (no big surprise) So, I made an appointment with my stylist. However, it is starting to fade and actually looks quite good because the highlights from before are showing through as a nice auburn color. So, the blooper has a happy ending!!
I also placed a response to Hipchick, stating that I am going through the same thing too. Well, like Hipchick, my hair has also faded to a medium brown shade, but I am still unhappy with it.
I noticed that you mentioned she could have the salon do a color correction and take out the dark color. Is this damaging to the hair? I am considering having my salon take the dark out, and put my natural shade into my hair.

Maybe by the time you read this you will be happy with your haircolor. If not having your color corrected would be the way to go. A salon will use a color remover and take out and remove the artificial color in your hair. What will happen is that some of the natural color may be affected also leaving your haircolor in an uneven color state. Usually the stylist will then use a demi-permanent or permanent color in the shade you desire to do an overall color. If this is what you decide to do I wish you a happy ending and a happy color day.
