QuoteReplyTopic: Pros and Cons of relaxer Posted: August 21 2001 at 1:00pm
Hi I have curly hair that is just past my shoulders. It`s quite fine but has volume and the curls are quite fat as oppose to skinny and ringletty. I have booked an appointment to have it relaxed. The stlyist said that it won`t make my hair poker straight, but it will reduce the curl and the `bulk` of it. Can anyone tell me what the bulk bit means and also, will blow drying it straight be easier if it has been relaxedr. If anyone has had realxer put in their hair, did it work and what were the pros and cons? I would be most greatful for any advice, thanks.

Hmmm, I would seriously question a relaxer on your type of hair. Most of them contain lye or sodium hydroxide which is very drying to the hair. Even the `textuizers" which do not straighten the hair completely contain harsh chemicals. With your hair you should be able to get good results by blowdrying it straight or rollersetting on very large rollers under the dryer. Daily use of heat will also dry your hair out though. You can reduce the bulk of your hair with a good layered cut but if you do make sure you get long layers so it doesn`t come out looking too "poufy". The first layer should start about chin length. If you do go with the relaxer, be prepared to condition it frequently and keep it well moisturized. Otherwise the relaxed hair can become brittle and start to break off, especially if you are blowdrying it daily as well. And lastly, a relaxer is permanent so you cannot "wash it out" or wear it out. It will not revert back to natural so when you want to get rid of it you will have to cut it out of your hair. Make sure your stylist gives you detailed instructions about how to care for it since you`ve never had one before. HTH
