QuoteReplyTopic: I`m sutck between curly-permed and naturaly striaght-HELP!! Posted: October 02 2001 at 3:17pm
I have naturally blonde a little bit wavy hair(barely any wave but if i put gel in it and scrunch it for 30 minutes i can make it curly) Anyways I always get compliments on my long blonde straight hair, the only problem is, to get it that way i get up at 5:45 AM to blow dry and straighten the few waves i have...this is time consuming and is also damaging to my hair. However lately i have been scrunching my hair and I have gotten so many more compliments on how good my hair looks curly, however scrunching it takes longer than the straightening does..should i get a perm???And if i don`t like it after it comes out what can i do? if i get a perm how much shorter willl my hair look? how much damage does it do? i am so confused...help!!! ~stuck in the middle
I, too, have stick straight hair, but the straight look doesn`t always fit in with what I am wearing or doing. I have often wished that I had curly hair, but I have learned to appreciate my hair in that it does have the ability to do many things, or become many styles. I have found that I`m not obligated to wearing it straight down all of the time. I, too, can have curly hair, and so can you!
:-)
I have tried to play with various styles and such, but have found that simply braiding wet or damp hair and using a curler on the ends as opposed to an elastic, the next day your hair is full of life, and fresh, bouncy waves or curls.
You can see my webpage below for a few photos of what I`ve managed to do to my hair to give it that perm look without the danger of a real perm. And if you don`t like the look, simply shampoo it out.
Also, you might try using perm rods and tissue papers on the ends, but not the chemicals. My hair turns out incredibly curly and bouncy when I do this.
Hope you can find a few ideas. Karen Marie

You seem to like the curls, and the compliments that come along with them. I`m biased towards curly hair so my encouragement is that you go for the curls ... texture is back in a big way after all! And, there`s nothing sexier than a head full of CURLS! Just stay away from any rod that is smaller than a white rod - how long is your hair? Do you have a regular stylist? If not call around to some of the better salons in your area and ask if they have any stylists that specialize in curly styles/perms. When you find one go in for a consultation - I`m sure any pro will be able to help you out, as well as think about a long term plan for your tresses.
A year ago when my wife wanted to perm her almost shoulder length straight hair her stylist talked to her about what she might do longer term and they decided to with a beatufiul "candlestick" wrap that created the most natural beautiful curls and then about 4-5 months later when it was growing out they had discussed cutting it rather short for a totally different look. But my wife knew is was coming and was excited about the different looks. Now she is growing it out again to try another perm and style.
It may be tough to think of your hairstyles in 2 year increments, but it paid off in her case.

Hey. I have the exact same kind of hair. My hair is curly, but it`s really thin and baby fine, so it doesn`t hold curl really well unless it`s long and heavy enough to keep the curls from going outward instead of downward. And because it`s not *that* curly, and because of the texture, it takes forever to get my hair to scrunch enough to be a really nice kind of curly. It`s a pain in the butt, because I either have to spend half an hour blowdrying it straight or half an hour curling it everyday.
My suggestion is to *not* get it permed. I`ve tried that, and all it did was make me miserable. I blowdry my hair straight every day, and the damage is not nearly as bad as what happens when you get a perm. I know so many perm horror stories...honestly, I don`t think it`s worth the risk. Just keep doing it the way you`re doing it. Perms are a long-term committment. And if it gets messed up...trust me. It will be a *long time* before your hair gets back to normal...

There are a number of ways to make straight hair curly and you are wise to consider the nonchemical options. Braiding wet hair is a good idea. The more braids you do, the curler your hair will be. I have also had very good luck with rag rollers. You can get everything from very tight curls to sausage (Shirley Temple) curls with rags (Marci`s Retro Style site has a good discussion of the rags technique http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/2457/techniques.html). Also, you might check out http://www.heatcap.com A good friend of mine recently purchased one and she is getting terrific curls that last for a couple of days and it hasn`t damaged her hair at all. Hope this helps. Happy curling! ;)

I too like the curls that result from using rags. I have used the Sleepers Hair Rollers in the past but see their web site recently became inactive. Too bad, it was a good product. I know someone that has the Wrap, Snap & Go! curlers (a product similar to Sleepers sold on TV) and she gets good results with them. Another curler to consider is the Sassy Curler (http://www.euroteezer.com/sassy.html) Select OUR PRODUCTS from the menu on the left and then SASSY to choose some demonstrations of the curls you can achieve with it. I have used a perm in the past to even out the curl but it really is something that should be done by a professional to minimize damage. Try the nonchemical methods first and you may find you really don`t need a perm. Good luck!
