I have really crazy, not-nice curly hair. Rather than form into nice, regular curls, some parts dry straight and some dry extremely curly, in ringlets. I straighten my hair daily with an iron after letting it air dry.

Two questions - would it ultimately cause more damage to continue to daily straighten my hair with heat, or chemically straighten it?

Second - if I have my hair chemically straightened, will it dry straight or will I have to use a hair dryer?

Thanks for your help.

since you put nothing on you hair to protect it from the heat from the iron, damage will occur more quickly, since your exposing your bare cuticle to heat, with nothing coating it.
I also straighten my wavy/frizzy hair with an iron but I make sure to use a real good deep/intensive care condtioner and shampoo(salon selectives shampoo and pantene complete therapy conditioner works good for my thick hair type) and when my hair is around 80% dry`s I put a heat protecting spray or straightening balm in my hair blow dry it than use a straightening iron
I do this almost everyday and my hair has not seemed to have gotten any more damaged
maybe this might work for you.
As for chemically straightening your hair I`m really not that much familiar with it so i`m not really sure if it`s more damaging than heat, but i`m assuming so since it involvesCHEMICALS,
but whatever you choose to do
good luck with your choice
Rita (:

I have wavy/curly hair that I`ve battled for years. I blew it as straight as possible, and then used a curling iron/flat iron to smooth it out. Last summer, I started getting Rusk AntiCurl treatments done in an attempt to cut down my styling time. AntiCurl is a chemical relaxer that is much gentler on hair than traditional relaxers, which are made for very coarse, ethnic hair types. It comes in three formulas and doesn`t irritate the scalp when applied. At first, I really liked the treatments because it smoothed my hair out a lot and reduced styling time. It did NOT make it so straight no heat styling was required, but it did help a great deal. It also made it more resistant to moisture and humidity. As for drawbacks, I don`t think it caused much damage, but it did make my hair kind of flat. If your hair is thicker, it won`t matter as much, but if it`s on the fine side, you may notice a lack of body. Also, if you get your hair colored (especially highlighted), the two chemical treatments can be a double whammy and make hair more prone to breakage. There is a formula for color-treated hair (which was used on me), but I think it`s better to choose either the straightener or the coloring to minimize damage. My verdict: If straightening is the only chemical treatment you want to do to your hair, go for it, otherwise proceed with caution. Don`t get your hopes up too high either- like I said, the AntiCurl helps smooth your hair out, but does not turn it into silk. Good luck if you decide to go the chemical route.

I forgot to mention that Rusk AntiCurl is only available in salons and should only be administered by a professional stylist. Call around and see which salons offer it and how often they have done the service. Ask your stylist if the salon offers the service, and even if they don`t, the product can usually be ordered.
