QuoteReplyTopic: monthly trimms? or chop off and start again? Posted: October 23 2002 at 9:37am
ok.....ive got an appointment for the hairdressers in 2 weeks time...now im wondering..... should i cut it upto say....my shoulders....and get rid of all the damaged bits..... or should i just have it trimmed?
whats the best one to do? bearing in mind that i want to grow my hair long... should i cut most of the damged off and start again....or regular trims every six weeks... and maintaining the length i have it at now? my hair length is at the bottom of my bra strap.... heavily layered.... i would post u my pic to show u what it looks like, but the latest pic i have got i put products on my hair.... and it doesnt look like its damaged...it looks normal..
so ppl which ones best???

Well, the hairdresser will probably tell you to cut it all off. Besides, they`ll be getting paid for doing it.
I would say that if it is really damaged, and you don`t mind losing the length, then go for it. If you really don`t want to lose the length, just get you trims frequently. But if it looks normal with products on your hair, it can`t possibly be that bad. There are some who put products on their hair and it still looks awful. :(
well, the only problem i have finally realised so far that i am havin a problem with...is...coz its so damaged..is the frizziness...so if i can somehow mask that then i wouldnt mind just havin a trim i dunno whether i shud or not... :S

Liz, do you have relaxed hair, naturally straight, curly, or what? I wear a relaxer, and so does my friend. She had the problem of those frizzies at the end of her hair. She told her hairdresser about this, and the simple solution was to put a little perm on the ends during the next touch-up. The hairdresser let it sit for a minutes, and I mean FEW minutes, and the frizzies will die down some, depending on how long the perm is left on the end. Her frizzies wore down, and she hasn`t complained of them since.
Though I have relaxed hair, thanks to John Frieda Ripple Effect, anytime my hair is wet, it`ll curl up on its own. I like this because it offers me versatility. I can wet it, and scrunch, and wear it curly, or I can wear it straight. My stylist wants to put some relaxer on my ends, so that it isn`t curly when it`s wet. But, I`m NOT going to let her do it!
Or a simple solution is find styles that dont` require it to be straight.

Hey Liz! I recently faced the same dilemma..... since you said you wanted to grow it longer, I`d say that it might be better to just get regular trims, altho if its really damaged, or if the damage reaches past the first inch or two of hair, then maybe it would be better to cut it off and start fresh. If you only trim it and don`t get rid of the damaged ends, they could keep splitting higher & higher and would stay damaged even if you did trim it. Sometimes its better (painful as it might be) to lose some length in favor of health. I dunno, I always thought that healthy hair is better than longer hair. That was the decision I came to- I got it cut, and yeah it was kinda painful, but its in such better condition now that I`m happy I did it. Anway, good luck to ya Liz! Love, Ingrid :)

I have to agree with Ingrid: I see a lot of women with long, long hair--a style I personally love--but it is damaged to the point of being frizzy, fried and straw-like. You might be happier with your hair if you cut off the damage and start fresh. I`m doing something similar--two years ago I dyed my hair multiple times (stupid, stupid) and hence fried my hair to a crisp. It was very long at the time (way down my back) and I cut it to my shoulders. As time progressed I kept cutting as much as I could while growing out the damage. I like growing out my hair as long as it`s healthy. Whatever you do, remember that you are probably way more conscious of your hair and its length than anyone else. That`s what I keep telling myself! Good luck and let us know how it turns out!
