Hi curlyheads,
I have very thick corkscrew curls and have been debating chemical straightening. My hairstylist suggested I get a "Permanent Wave" instead, which she claims is much less toxic and makes hair frizz-free and wavy (which is fine with me, I don't need it stick straight. I just hate frizz). Have any curlyheads out there tried this method? Is it really that much less toxic? Any advice about any kind of straightening at all (that doesn't require intensive every-day labor) would be greatly appreciated! I am brand new even to the idea of straightening!

I've never had it chemically straightened. but I have tried the wave, and since I blow-dry my hair everyday, trying to get it undersome sort of control, I figured 'what the hey?'...and so I did it. It didn't bother my hair, really, and made it fairly easy to take care of...this is back when it was healthy, tho...lol...now it's just a big mess. :) so, if your hair is healthy, you should be ok :)

You could get a perm on large rod/rollers, which would soften your hair a bit, but can still damage your hair - although not as much as relaxing it..

That way you can choose a curly style you like, rather than be stuck with what you've got - but it won't be straight..

You may want to consider getting a maintamer relaxer. This is a very gentle tr styled relaxer which is absolutely damage free. I just had Leslie Correa of Capelli D'or Salon in NY apply a maintamer relaxer to my dry, curly hair and it's never felt smoother. Also, I've never been happier with my hair in my life. Also, liscio has a very gentle relaxer too but I forget the name. Either of these relaxers will be much less damaging to your hair than a permanent wave since they were both formulated to be damage free. If you want more info, feel free to email you. I wish I had asked Leslie to take before and after pics but I simply wasn't thinking.

Anyway, I know you'll make the right decision.

Peace,

Mark
