jam~ Curly hair is very fragile; i remember my grandma trying to brush my curly hair and looking like a ball of frizz afterward from damage and breakage. You shouldn't brush her hair with a brush or fine toothed comb. Only use a wide-toothed comb and try to only comb it out when wet. The easiest is to wash gently, apply conditioner and comb out with conditioner in it. after this combing, try not to comb until the next washing. If you want to comb every night, apply a leave in conditioner liberally and fingercomb thru.

Applying a tiny bit of oil after washing as a styling product may help greatly with tangles and will define her curls. Jojoba oil and coconut oil seem to be favorites of curly girls and will help tremendously with tangles. I hope you find a solution that will help your daughter to love her curls!

When i read your thread i thought MY mom had written it! im 13, and mostly i hate my thick, curly hair. i think my hair is probably curlier than your daughters because it is really wavy/curly when wet and i like it that way. im still experimenting but i know that olive oil is pretty good to use as a before conditioner and it is cheap... also if you have a reallllyyy realllyyy good conditioner that is really important and you need to use a generous amount except for not on the roots or it will get oily. i went to a ouidad salon once, and my hair looked GREAT but it grew out and i just got a really bad haircut. i think that the longer the better, and make sure her hair dresser cuts INTO the curl instead of pulling it straight, then cutting. that ends up uneven. just a hint: we hate it when you tell us a million times how pretty it is... it helps more if you just say that you understand that its tempting to not like what you have but you cant ever change it for good. (clue my mom in?)
another curly girl...

I have curly hair too and recently found an amazing product by Catwalk (part of the TIGI line). It is called Curls Rock and I use the "curl ampliphier" and "curl booster" on soaking wet hair and then let it either air dry or dry it with a diffuser. also, to straighten your daughter's hair temporarily, i recommend using a straightening balm to protect the hair from heat and damage and then blow drying it straight and then using a ceramic straightening iron, or setting in on huge hair rollers and sitting under a dryer, and then using a straight iron to get out any leftover kinks.
