I'm not sure what the style is actually called, but I am a young black man very interested in getting my hair in "twists". I first saw Montell Jordan wearing them. Now I've seen a few basketball players sporting them (Corless Williamson and Nick Anderson by the way).

Can anyone give me any info?

Hi. Those twists you are talking about, many people use to start locs. Usually, braid salons do twists or your local natural hair stylist. Prices range from $35 to $100 to start them, and you should use someone who works with natural hair if you want to loc eventually. You only need like 1/2 inch of virgin hair to start them, although the African braiders may be able to do them with shorter hair.

Twists are a beautiful style...on men and women...

Good luck, and stay up! I hope this is helpful to you.

I've been getting as much information on this subject since my first post. D.L. Hughley now has his hair this way. I really want to get this done. Here are my questions--I hope someone can help me.

1. Is 1/2 to 3/4 inches hair enough to start?
2. Is this style actually done by coiling the hair with a ratail comb?
3. How much does it normally run and how often would I have to get it touched up?
4. Should I go to a natural hair specialist to get it done?

I actually have my hair styled like this right now. My stylist calls them coils and you need at least 1 1/2 inches of natural kinky/curly hair to work with. The stylist normally washes my hair and takes light styling gel w/ aloe vera extract, nature`s blessing hair dressing, natty loc product and aloe vera juice to start coiling. She uses a rat tail comb and takes a small section... combs it out and then proceeds to twist the hair using the comb while pulling through it. By the time she gets to the end she has a neat little coil. Many people think I am wearing a straw set when they see it and are surprised to hear it is done on natural hair. Hope that helps.

I want to have my hear locked and heard that twisting it is the best way to go. I have heard several different things about using bees wax as well. I live in Boston and have heardand seen bad stories about people who went and spent a lot of money didn`t get what they paid for ($150-$400)
I am mixed black and cuban (hair type, thick w/ a tight curl). I called different salons and they said it would be harder to twist/lock. I have had natural hair for over a year and its a little over and inch in length. If anyone has any suggestions or information its much appreciated. I would even concider going to NYC to get it done right!

here what you should do w/o spending alot of money....
gey you some white beeswax (murrays) is good...
{get white because the dark kind gets your hands dirty and pulls out your hair}
and a towel.
in this case... beeswax is not really nescesary. if your hair is kinda straight, yu might wanna use it but if you have like an afro texture you can just use the towel and rub it in a circular motion in ONE direction onlyuse moderate pressure. or put on a genorous amount of beeswax in your palm and rub it like grease in your hands and spread it in your head like grease and rub the towel in the circular motion in ONE direction and just keep rubbing still using moderate pressure untill you get the desired look.
any more questions, email me
hope i was helpful
