My best friends daughter has extremely curly hair, similar in texture to African-American hair. When the hair reaches a certain length, it becomes very dry and brittle and breaks off, leaving bald patches. Chemical straightening hasn't worked and she has tried various hair creams and lotions specifically designed for curly hair with no success. This situation is very embarassing for her daughter and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, I have definately been down that road before and I too couldn't handle chemical straigteners. Eventually my hair would get soo dry and brittle that it would break too. I'm African American and since I went natural I noticed that I couldn't use most of the commercial products marketed for African American hair, nor could I use the stuff that's for curly hair. Although I just very recently put in a Naturalaxer (see my post under Straightening hair), I still use mostly all natural products in my hair. The key is to learn how to take care of your hair properly (still learning), proper nutrition (still working on it), learning ways to destress, massaging the scalp for stimulation, and moisture. Below is a list of websites dedicated to various hair types and textures. They've been very helpful to me in deciding what kinds of products to try and what to run away from ;-) Such as using Shea butter, jojoba oil, olive oil, etc. for moisture. Aubrey Organics, Burts Bees, Lush, Aveda, KMS, Biosynthesis, Abba, Ouidad etc. seem to be some popular hair (& skin care) brands. Also they provide plenty of advice and hair care tips such as using seemless combs (prevents hair breakage) and sleeping on satin pillowcases. Hopefully you'll be able to find an answer for your friend's daughter's needs.

Concerning the dryness, concentrate on maintaining the proper moisture balance. If you maintain the proper moistue balance you would stand a great chance of preventing this type of breakage from happening. Should you need further discussion, please don't hesitate contacting me.
