The only way I know of keeping your braids tidy is BY NOT WASHING THEM. Washing makes them messy. When I wear braids I do not wash them, and I keep them in for about 3 months. You get used to it quite quickly and they don`t really smell, I rub tea tree oil into the scalp every month to clean it and that`s all you need.
Hair will clean itself and since it is in braids it doesn`t get so damaged. I would recommend putting in a hot oil treatment the day before you want to take them out to moisturise them and it makes it easier to get the braids out.
Also always tie your hair back and use a do wrap at night, playing with your hair and treating it like white wash and go hair is not advisable. Essential for keeping your hair neat: the less you mess with it the better it stays.
Another thing to do is unplait a few of the front rows and have them replaited every month then it always looks new. You can do this yourself, well I could and I am crap at plaiting and canerows!
